Tune of the Month for August 2012: Mintin Atao
« on: August 01, 2012, 12:36:23 AM »

A clear winner again this month,

Mintin Atao - a beautiful, simple French waltz written by Florence Pinvidic. And here is a lovely video of her playing it... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TcGX7x1vJ6I . (This was on the poll as Valse de Vent - Mintin Atao is the proper name)

I *have* tried playing this now, and it fits quite nicely on a 2 row; not too tricky, and rather a pretty gentle laid back thing. It flips across the rows a little (at least when I played it). I'm not sure how (if) it would fit on a one row though.

Courtesy of Bill, here's some ABC, first in D minor, and as played by Florence in her video on a C/F:

Code: [Select]
X:1
T:Mintin Atao
M:3/4
C:Florence Pinvidic
K:Ddor
D z2 F AD | d4 d2 | c4 d2 | A6 |
f3 e d2 | e3 d c2 | A3 G c2 | A6 |
D z2 F AD | d4 d2 | c4 G2 | A6 |
a3 G f2 | g4 e2 | d4 c2 |1 d6 :|2 d z [d2 f2] [e2 g2] ||
[f3 a3] e fg | a4 c'2 | a6 | [e6 g6] |
[d4 f4] [d2 f2] | [d3 f3] [e g] [d2 f2] | [c6 e6] | -[c3 e3] d e2 |
f3 e fg | a4 c'2 | a6 | [e6 g6] |
[f3 a3] [e g] [d2 f2] | G2 e3 c |1 d6 | -d z [d2 f2] [e2 g2] :|2 d6 | -d6 ||

And a version for D/G players in E minor:

Code: [Select]
X:1
T:Mintin Atao
M:3/4
C:Florence Pinvidic
K:Edor
E z2 G BE | e4 e2 | d4 e2 | B6 |
g3 f e2 | f3 e d2 | B3 A d2 | B6 |
E z2 G BE | e4 e2 | d4 A2 | B6 |
b3 A g2 | a4 f2 | e4 d2 |1 e6 :|2 e z [e2 g2] [f2 a2] ||
[g3 b3] f ga | b4 d'2 | b6 | [f6 a6] |
[e4 g4] [e2 g2] | [e3 g3] [f a] [e2 g2] | [d6 f6] | -[d3 f3] e f2 |
g3 f ga | b4 d'2 | b6 | [f6 a6] |
[g3 b3] [f a] [e2 g2] | A2 f3 d |1 e6 | -e z [e2 g2] [f2 a2] :|2 e6 | -e6 ||

A really pretty little tune; looking forward to hearing what versions come out!

Cheers,

Clive

Tune of the Month for August 2012: "Mintin atao"
« Reply #1 on: August 01, 2012, 10:42:20 AM »

In my role as unofficial French interpreter to the group Clive asked me (1:00am) to assure copyright issues - very quick reply  ;D as follows

Bien cordialement F.Pinvidic

I'm delighted to give [the group] permission to proceed in this [TOTM] framework, with a few wishes of my own:

-  Be clear that its original name is Mintin atao not "Waltz of the Wind" (job for Clive)!
-  To stay true to its original harmony here's a link to the original score on our website:
    http://diouflo.com/fichiers/fichiers_tablat/mintin_atao_diato.pdf
-  Make clear to interested melneters that it comes with a counterpoint - score/tab is in the compilation "waltzes for two voices"
    http://diouflo.com/francais/recueils_diato_valses_a_deux_voix.html

I've not recorded a CD with it on, but my latest CD, Chemins, has only accordeon pieces, and should please those who like Mintin Atao/Waltz of the Wind. See http://diouflo.com/francais/cd.html

... so as ever .. if you like the music .. please buy the CD  ;) Chris

For those who are interested, this CD is available from iTunes.  I've had it for some time and would highly recommend it.

I wanted to give the tune of the month a try for the beginner's showcase but I think I've run into a problem. How would I go about playing the left hand side? I play a B/C melodeon with a Joe Burke bass layout. Should I just try to drone with the basses?

Joe Burke's B/C
(top of instrument)
        outside inside
chord  D/D     E/A
bass    D/D     E/A

chord  G/G     C/F
bass    G/G     C/F

Hmmm... tricky. Are your chords major/minor, or without thirds (i.e. neither minor nor major)? If they're mostly major, this is a minor tune, so you'll struggle to fit any chords to it, though the bass notes might work. Playing it in D minor, with a D drone and occasional splashes of the other chords. Or alternatively just leave the bass and chords out of course - they don't have to be there.

Cheers,

Clive

In case anybody is interested, Mintin Atao has nothing to do with the wind. Translated from the Breton it literally means Morning Always. Great tune.

Yeah, yeah - try going to Brittany, mate!  ;)  I've been checking out Florence's links andfrom here email, I guess the "true version" is the duet. It is several clicks away from the URL she gives. Yes, I found that duet video, encouraged by your translated response posted earlier. And though there are dots-with-tab for the tune, and the melody breaks into occasional pairs of notes in thirds, the second melody part in the duet video is something else entirely. Notation doesn't seem to be available for that, and the sound quality on the video is going to make transcription hard work.

Do you suppose the harmony part is composed, or improviseé?

I feel Florence's email gives a strong sense of 'composition' and "cette valse comporte un contrechant, partition/tablature dans le recueil" explicitly points to something  written (even if we've not found it. "Pour que l'harmonisation soit respectée" could even be read as a request to use her chords, though my French isn't up to that - F2F I'd look to body language. I did my A level during the 2001 elections, and got to Paris for both presidentials. "Préciser" was something the politicians were doing all the time (though generally followed by something they couldn't be held to later)  ;)

On the other hand - Bretons are the most inveterate improvisers in the whole of France  ;D

If you want the second voice to this tune you will have to shell out 30 euros as it is in the 'collection "Diato 4 mains" (vol.1) - Valses à deux voix'; available from their website.

The reference to the meaning of "Mintin Atao" you will find in a press clipping, also on their website:

Thanks for the response. All my chords are major. I'll give both a try and see which sounds best :)

Enjoyed grappling with the tune even though probably not as writ (but hopefully acceptable for all that). Certainly brought the 'melodeon face'   :-\ to the fore, good job it is not on show!

Best regards

Wow, that is nicely done. I like the sonorous tone and the contrast with the second part. Terrific. Thanks for that example.

Here's my recording of this tune; I've slowed it down a bit, and tried to introduce a little 'boombal' mazurka feel into it, though I'm not sure I've been fully successful with that.

Played on my Hohner Pokerwork in D/G (my first box); first time through the B music is played in the higher register; on the second time, the B music is played in the lower register, which would work nicely if you had a low B on the treble (I don't on this box), so I've had to change the last bar of the tune (oops, sorry).

What a different feel your version has. The oom pa pa is gone.

I've been watching your bass and can see (and hear) that you vary which bass note you play prior to a chord. Is that to provide variation or is something more musically complex happening? I'd love to understand more about what you are doing on that bass end.
