Does anyone know what this tune is called and anything else about it? A dance band I played in about 30 years ago used to do it. Haven't heard it since but it popped into my head the other day. Fun to play on the box.

Hi Steve,

This is "Ymdaith Gwyr Dyfnaint" - which translates as 'The March of the Men of Devon'. A great tune indeed! As far as I know it is traditional Welsh and a written version can be found in 'Blodau'r Grug' - 100 Popular Welsh Folk Dance Tunes, published by the Welsh Folk Dance Society. In that book it is paired with 'Machynlleth' (see below), another really stonking Welsh processional tune to make up the dance set 'Ffaniglen'.

Cheers,
Steve

Fantastic, diolch yn fawr, Steve. Nice to have something to go with it and pull out at sessions around 1 March - along with Men of Harlech of course, which I think is the best box tune ever.  :)

If it is March of the Men of Devon then Mary Humphreys & Anahata have made a wonderful recording of it, played with Dennington Bell, on their CD Fenlandia. As it happens I was listening to it last night in the car and thinking what a cracking tune it is.

it's a great dance tune which I have used for a long time as the lead tune in a set for the Caerphilly March. Second tune being "Yndeath Caerffili" we go on to play "Cosher Bailey", "Monk's March", and "Dr Finley's Casebook"

Nothing to be curious about risto - what I play differs little from what is shown above. It's a tune I've known since my early childhood. I wasn't being entirely serious when I said "best box tune ever" but I do get a peculiar kick out of playing it occasionally as light relief from my usual practice fare - especially since I got a box with a C bass on it. Stirs my Welsh blood - all 2 pints of it!
