Small brass hook- what's it for?
« on: May 14, 2013, 08:30:47 PM »

The design of many melodeons (including mine) have a small hook screwed into the end of the right hand fingerboard. What does it do/what's it used for? The only thing I could think of was a spindle  ::)
Brass hook as in this picture:

Whatever you do, don't remove it to find out what it does! It is a spindle and the entire treble mechanism spins on it....  It's not always a hook, btw, often a round nutty thing.

Not a hook! :o It's the end of a wire that passes right through the melodeon. As Steve hints, the hinge (or axel) around which the entire left right hand mechanism turns. If you pull it it'll all fall out.

I learned this the hard way, after dropping wood glue on my keyboard :-\  Took me about a minute to work it out, pull the "hook", wash the mechanism. Reassembly took a bit longer, but all was well.  :Ph

(Pedant warning!!!)

I think a better and more common term might be "axle"....

A spindle generally refers to a rotating core whereas this is a fixed core around which other things rotate.

But I'm sure there are exceptions..... :-X

A long time ago - it might have been at Whitby Folk Festival, I can't remember for certain - I once saw the catastrophic effect of the involuntary removal of the axle rod. A morris musician had tied some ribbons on to the loop at the end of the axle (you can see where this is going, can't you).

Sure enough, the ribbons got snagged on something and pulled the axle rod out, resulting in a mess of loose levers and a bent axle.  :o
Moral - never attach anything to the axle....

In the trade the usual name of this component is "axle rod"

The best place to fix the ribbons is to the lower buckle of the shoulder strap, or even the shoulder strap anchor bracket.

Nah... surely it's for attaching a hook to hang your tankard on on dance out days?  :|glug :|||:

Thank you so much - this was a disaster waiting to happen (and thankfully now it won't).

Aradru, it wasn't your use of the term that I was referring to, but that of earlier posts.
Your usage is quite correct.

And OK, Theo, I know when I'm out-pedanted...   :D ;D :D

........ the hinge around which the entire left hand mechanism turns....

I am sure you meant to say the right hand! :||:
The advice is the same: Leave well enough alone!

Its on the left on all my boxes, and as it also comes out the top its not likely to fall out by accident.

axle, rod, s(pin)dle, axle-rod (sounds like a US political pundit)....

This is getting confusing. Surely (as I'm sure Andy S will agree) we should adopt whatever term the Italians use?

I presume then, that you play the treble side with your left hand?

I was wondering how that might work, good thinking.

Axle rod help
« Reply #19 on: January 11, 2014, 06:46:25 PM »

Ok guys I woke up this morning to find a 'lever' on my D/G Hascy (last one on the D row descending down from the chin end) keeps jamming and sticking. I have looked around on the forum but couldn't initially find anything too helpful, though I may have been looking in completely the wrong places.
I have decided to remove the axle rod in order to have a good look at the situation (I think the spring has broken). This will require every single lever to be removed.
Now, my question is do the axle rods generally require unscrewing, by which I could see the possibility of the small hook sheering off due to strain, or pulling out via the hook? I am not generally ham-fisted so of course I shan't go crazy, pulling it out any which way and bending the rod.
    Thanks for replies.
