French field recording #6 - the scottiche
« on: August 06, 2013, 09:28:33 AM »

The scotti(s)che is ubiquitous at bals folk. It's rhythm is 4 time, but importantly with a skip, correstponding to when the dancers push off in a new direction. Which they do quite a lot.

  https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10200452273175935 publicked

bar 1 you chassée sideways, and back. Can be very open, even "step apart"
bar 2 is about turning, clockwise seen from above. A good dancer will hold his lady closer here, minimising moment of inertia, faster spin. a very common variant at this point is for the bloke to stand still and pin the lady undar his arm

Basic man step reverse R/L for lady

left together left hop; right together right hop
you are the on correct foot to start your spin part

The couple in dark tops are probably closest to this, MUCH variation!

Here's one, clearly made up but think I have danced it somewhere, recall the partner switch

  https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10200459281711144

… would be done in a bal, only by prior arrangement!

thanks, I find the FB permissions confusing. but AFAIR I did an explicit "public" on my first day. It triggered re-post, lost useful comments and looked a right mess. Then noticed my default and felt daft. But looks like … a man has to do … etc  :-\

Cracking bal last night with a strong accordéonist, at least 500 up, floor was heaving! Nice little fest noz too. Loffet duo partner Yves le Blanc singing p'tit Bretons over a … small barrel organ … surrounded by boxes of of Jacquard punched cards! AND the whole floor joined in! Super atmosphere. Loffet is a big floor sound man here incidentally. There is no instrument sale facility beyond some scribbled notes  on bulletin boards.

Still only 3 Brits here, though Hester has married Rolf the Viking, gone native ;) Think the "Grand Bal clique" all get their fix at Gennetines, by design it carries on from Ch.d'Ars weekend.

Says "content not available" with a blurb that includes permissions etc.  I can see stuff from you on FB generally, usually via mutual friends. Tried several others with same result and gave up.

Ps on PC last night and iPad this am.

Hi Chris,
No access for me either. Not a FB user. Tried to access on an iPhone (5). Get login/register page and message; 'you must log in first'. Bob

I think FB have just made it too difficult to set permissions for public access and are the last place I would now post anything I wanted to share publicly.

Chris has tweaked something though, giving permission for public access - we of no FB accounts can now see the videos.

went into them and set them all to "public" which "should" make them web viewable? Otherwise I guess you need a little FB account. If you don't actually post much it can't gather much of a profile on you. Anyway it's algorithm is pretty useless, it started offering me life insurance last year!

Why can Steve (famously facebookless) see, and Bob not … ???

Tweak was about 0930 BST, you might need a "refresh"  Apple types will always need to go via an app to get round the flash/apple obstainacy incompatibility.

Not seen that variant - that could be interesting.
My favorite scottiche variant is en rond.

is there a video? These posts are an attempt to inform UK play of French bal  traditionnel and fest noztunes, which should "inform the feet" or mean nothing :-\  But the dances are interesting in themselves, and do so much to explain the music.

I'm an apple-iferrous type and didn't need anything extra (we don't need no apps) other than being on safari to be able to see the videos.  ;)

Back to track. can't travel out tonight, so googled some scottisches. This one intrigued

  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GtpG-DzZo0M

Nice and skippy, but he has it as a Breton! Only 7 hours drive from here ;)
Andro/scottische rhythms almost the same, You often see lone couples amongst an dro lines.

Perfection http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ki0dKZR_7S8
Lovely speed, right skip, with Paris's original intro 8) that no one ever does  :'(

ditto http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4sVq6Pu0Ejw Cliff Stapleton's wonderful "man in the brown hat" medleyed to "blue sausage island". Both play in Em on a D/G. BSI needs an A♯ acc as it's in a harmonic minor mode (4th of Bm) EF♯GA♯BC♯DE, "dorian♯4" ... Mike Gulston is a superb dancer incidentally, here at St Gervais.

Early morning call  :-\ this Scottische from Brotto-Lopez, by product of the St Vincent googling

   Zig-Zag http://youtu.be/JkxYuv1-8wg

Great dancing on there too, better seen with not too many up. Brotto's rhythm would be bliss to dance over. "Dagadagadaga--Dagadagadaga--Dagadagadaga--Dagadagadaga--" as theo recently put it  (:)

Another acknowledged right-end chording "nappe" maestro is Milleret, who produced this video last year based on «British Swing» (GC box)

"Rhythmiques" video 1 "le 2/4" bottom of the page
  http://www.mustradem.com/Formation/diato.php
  Direct on youtube -  http://youtu.be/Am78ivB4KxQ

  Dots and tab
  http://www.mustradem.com/Formation/partitions/British%20Swing.pdf

   Vocab
index, majeur (middle), and annulaire (ring) fingers

Note how sparse the left end is, for both players?
