Making Basses Interesting
« on: June 26, 2014, 12:13:34 AM »

At the request of Arty in the Les Deux Freres thread, I've done a little video that only really scratches the surface of exploring the bass end. I'm low on time at the moment (moving house at the weekend), so I just hit record and played/talked at the camera, so the ideas aren't especially concise, but I hope it's of some use.  (:)

Great first "didactic video"  (:) Do we have a budding professor of music?

Anyone who likes Bonny Kate and has 3rds out can also try B5/Gbass (B5 =BF# chord) which gives a push B  maj 7 effect. See left hand crossed chords. Ollie has quite a few of those in play (also available for free on your box), but I think his "vertical" and "horizontal" concept perhaps the most useful, tied closely into bass runs in general. Bonny Kate part B runs the whole scale (though most don't have an F# button handy) ;)

I am so grateful to you Ollie, for making this video tutorial, saying THANKYOU seems inadequate for the help you are giving in this and your previous video.

There are a lot of tutor books and general help out there for  the complete beginner and also a lot of inspirational ideas for the more advanced player but there seems very little for people like me, who are no longer complete beginners and want to move on with their playing. Your little tutorials seem to be filling that gap nicely.

I have John Kirkpatricks DVD and John Spiers' too. They are brilliant, both of them but I find the amount of information packed into them is far too dense and if I was going to try learning from them, I would spend a lot of time starting and stopping the DVD player in order to find the bit I needed. I wish there was a boxed set of DVD's, just like the ones you have just made, where each disc deals with one aspect of playing the melodeon. Like a set of 12 lessons, if you like, representing 12 months of learning. One disc for the treble side, another for playing chords on the treble side, a third for the basses, as you have just done, a fourth - putting the two sides together, another for playing in a more musical, imaginative way, another for rhythm etc., etc.. I could go on.... It's just an idea. If you or someone else made a series of DVD lessons for people like me, past the beginner stage, I would most certainly buy it and I would think many others would too.

I am looking forward to the release of your CD Ollie, I love the thoughtful way you play. But I can see, from the 2 videos you have just made, that you are a gifted teacher too. Maybe, if you had the time, you could benefit from producing these tutorials instead of giving them freely.

Once again, a big thankyou and good luck with moving house!  (:)

Do we need a teaching videos subsection? Presently these are scattered through 1200 or so other posts. Actually a locked thread at the top run by a headmaster type would suffice, links pasted in as they proved popular? Lester kindly does this for tune of the month. I've done this sort of things for my French bal reference and Grenoble videos. See the latter are some 9 pages deep already ;)
