Hi all,
Just a thought re insuring instruments.
With the recent instrument price hike the instruments we own were no longer adequately covered on our house insurance,we had personal effects cover away from home up to a new for old replacement value of £2500.Castagnari Tommy not covered, also other instruments not covered.
I'm sure other people in same boat, worth checking especially when vehicles and camps at festivals are often targeted, which may be even worse this year in view of current situation

Get a tatty old pokerwork...
Seriously though Wink
I pay a Euro a week.. now that's a pound a week ... for full cover.
Get out the calculator and do your sums. If it makes sense then insure... but I don't think the "risk" ... having your box nicked... would ever balance the benefit of playing i.e. carrying it about the place.. to parties, festivals.. wot not.. and having so much fun.
This is not the time to hold your melodeon under a bushel. Let it see the light.

I try not to think about insurance, as I am by no means sure that my box is covered. If it gets a pint of beer down the grill it would cost a fair bit as well I'd imagine. Lovely.

And always keep your receipts.  A friend (guitarist) once had his van burgled while it was parked behind his shop overnight.  He couldn't prove that he owned the two guitars that were stolen, although he was compensated for the tools.

And don't leave instruments in vehicles!  Most insurance companies will baulk at that one no matter how well you are insured.

Join the Musicians' Union - they are a welcoming bunch, even to us amateurs.
You get some (I can't remember how many) hundreds of pounds of cover as a benefit of membership, and you can increase that as you wish.  It includes cover overnight in cars.
Unfortunately there is usually no alternative to keeping instruments in cars - particularly at festivals etc.

Bryson - you are dead right.  Get them out and play them.  Hang the consequences!

Do the MU give you 3rd Party/Personal Liability Cover as part of membership?

Yes, the MU do provide public liability cover as standard with membership. I recently had cause to be grateful for that, as a venue refused to let my band play unless I could demonstrate that we had public liability cover. I guess it's a sign of the times to be asked for it - first time in 15 years.

Just to show how easily instruments are stolen,on Allodi web site he has had a Fantini CP11 accordion stolen in early March from his shop [he is asking for any info so if spotted in the hands of someone who you wouldn't expect to have it,check out web site for description of thieves],Ian Stephenson had a melodeon stolen whilst packing up after a gig,a friend of ours had a Takamine guitar stolen whilst he went to the bar.

We could all be a victim if care not taken

It is worth taking a look at Newmoon Insurance's Musical Instrument Insurance. They provide instrument cover, and also public liability if you need it. According to their site they are actually comprised of ex-Allianz staff

It is worth taking a look at Newmoon Insurance's Musical Instrument Insurance.

I was a bit shocked! I put in £3.5k for the Gaillard and £2k for the Oakwood.

World wide cover with no excess. £5.5k cover was under £33  Cool

So recommended here too ...

mel2 Just found out that if you are an existing Allianz, Lark or Musicguard customer and you quote the code PROMO12411 you can get 12 months cover for the price of 11 ! I think this is only if you call them on 0845 072 8535

Another vote for Newmoon Insurance.

My existing insurance came up for renewal and I was dismayed to see the amount of the premium based on updated valuations. So I shopped around a bit and Newmoon came out with a substantial saving (£80 per year cheaper). Plus I got a discount for being a Musicians' Union member and also a No-claims discount from my previous insurances.

The chap I dealt with at Newmoon was aware of this forum, and apparently has got some extra business as a result of this thread.

I've just insured two violins and a box with Jo at Newmoon, all singing and dancing £0 excess, theft from car etc. and they beat other insurers price wise by a mile.

Moderators, give them a call! they want to do a discount for Melnet members!!!
