What on earth is this?
« on: May 27, 2009, 11:45:07 PM »

Copied from another thread so that it isn't hijacked too much.

This youtube video was noticed:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IPahsEGQHz8&feature=related

It appears to be a three row unisonoric accordion, played without straps and with a rather interesting and peculiar bass system.

A little research yielded the following video, which suggests that actually it is bisonoric and the first person was just very good at crossing rows.

However, one can't get a good view of the bass end, so it might be something different.

Looking at the blog of the person who submitted it, the following link and picture were discovered.

Unfortunately I don't understand Latvian so can't make much sense of the blog entry.

Does anyone know anything about this?

That's interesting, because the only accordion like that that I've seen was this one, which was given to Brendan Begley when he played in Estonia, following the country regaining its independence in 1991. He lent it to me for a few days, not long after he got it.

Whilst there's nothing quite like it amongst the accordions on the folklora.lv website - so maybe it's Estonian, rather than Latvian?  ???

Is it? Ah, I wouldn't know. One of the websites had a .lv extension, hence my assumption.

There's a fingering layout on Vikipeedia that I've just found.

It would appear to be in C/G/D with an extra half row of stuff tacked on. Their diagram is very difficult to make sense of, but Blue is push and Red is pull.

Seems to look to me like D/G/C/F (with a pair of tonic/dominant bass for each row), with a repeating C gleichton on the inner (F) row. There's no indication of where A=440 fits into this, so one assumes the tonal range is that of a standard G/C/F with a low D row. Or not... :-\

Remember - using foreign note naming convention, H is B and B is Bb... which probably adds to the confusion... just as much as the confusing row pattern! ::)
