Hello to everybody

I'm Michael from Vienna (Austria), I just started playing diatonic accordeon.
in June 2009 and I'm progressing quite well (at least I believe so)
Despite Austria has its own diatonic accordeon tradition
( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steirische_Harmonika ), I'm interesting
in playing the 'ordinary' diatonic accordeon.

Actually I have been playing hurdy gurdy for 2 1/2 years now, mostly
medieval stuff and continental folk, but once the desire came up to play
the same music on a different instrument. I loved the sound of the button boxes,
so it was clear for me, which instrument I would start with.

Today after three months I have four button boxes - yes I'm addicted to collecting ;-) -
most of them from ebay, which I have spent 600 EUR on in total.

Fotunatly I was able to get a Hohner Corona IIIR (G/C/F) in good condition for 250,
on which I'm playing now (I have started with a lended instrument)
The other ones are
a "Hohner Club X" from the 1930 (C/F), in good condition, needs some repair,
a "Royal Standard" wooden 3 row accordeon with 34 buttons and 16 basses (G/C/F)
from the 1920s, needs a bit more repair
and a little 21 button box in D/G - vienna made (!), today there are no accordeon makers
anymore in Vienna - maybe also from the 1920s - needs some major renovation

... but I'm dreaming of a superior accordeon made by Castagnari, Saltarelle, ...

Currently I'm learning using the accordon book by Yann Dour
http://www.editions-caruhel.com/diatonic-accordion/24_4_/fingering-chart-Diatonic-accordion-tutor.--Vol.1-:The-beginner’s-book.html
but I'm thinking about starting taking lessons in autumn - fortunatly there are a
few diatonic accordeon players giving lessons.

Welcome Micheal

I would be very interested if there are any sessions or gatherings in Vienna as I am there on a reasonably regular basis (I am typing this in a hotel in Mariahilfer Strasse), it would be good to do something else than eat and drink on company expenses.

I'll tell you, when there is one. Usually you can find the dates in
the calender on the top left on http://www.tradivarium.at, but sometimes there
are extra sessions announced on a short notice.
usually on http://de.groups.yahoo.com/group/wiener_folkwinkel/

The tunes are played usually all in a key of D (D major, D minor, D dorian, ...), a few maybe
also in G ... because there always instruments with drones (hurdy gurdy, bag pipe)
Fortunatly this session has been turned into a non-smoker session a half year ago :-)

I've done very well resisting the bug at Whitby. I found two absolute heaps in a junk shop and didn't buy either of them! (Ones in good condition at the Leisure Centre I just drool over, 'cos I can't afford thme at the moment - roll on the OAP and riches!)

Fabulous session last night. If you are ever in Vienna on 4th Thursday do go along. I will start a new thread on why it was so good.

Thanks Micheal

My "Karl Schwirsch Melodeon Refurbishment Project" is currently in progress ...
Next steps: reattaching pallets to the clavis levers, and the reeds will get new valves

Also the 8-stop melodeon is in refurbishment process:
I have fixed all the loose glued joints .. there have been quite alot
Currently I'm reconstructing the reedblocks .. they dissolved more or less completely into their single parts
I will make them removeable, they had been glued permanently to the treble side previously.

After 5 months of learning playing melodeon: Valse a Bruno on Hohner Erica GC in A minor .. I have just tested my new 'Zoom H2' recorder :-)

Like it!   Is the music on the Internet anywhere, either score or ABC?
