BLIMEY!... I wish i knew what notes i play! .... I have absolutely no idea what key i'm in or what actual note i'm playing!... or what Chords i put to it! ... for me Its all just what sounds right to me!... am i weird?  ;D :||:
I also play a couple of other instruments. When I'm playing solo I don't always know what I'm playing, but when you're playing together it helps if you all stick to the same chord scheme  ;)
the original piece is written in 3/4 but it's a mazurka not a waltz so the rhythm is dotted.
I just got back from a dance festival in France. A mazurka that I play dotted at about the same pace as l'Inconnu was played there straight and a lot faster. Guess there's an exception to everything.

I'm up for the challenge of this tune! Haven't heard it before but very keen to have a go at it! I'm still finding my way around this site so can some one please send me the sheet music?
I think it sounds fantastic this tune. Thank you!

I had a go on inside row this weekened and it wasn't too fluid even with a multi bass.  The chord runs in the 'A' section go .. (on a D/G)

  G (Em C) D   = tonic (subdominants) dominant
  D (A/B G) A  = as above

In D you only have A on the pull, but fortunately the notes you'd like to play are in right direction.  "It works"

G is already more fluid ... You can change to Em slightly earlier if you need to be pulling,  C chord plays both ways, D is also both ways, so when you come to variation or improvisation you won't be constrained in any way.

Inconnu's 'B' music is more problematic  To my ear its beauty lies in that long 2 bar section played the IV chord: C. It is very lyrical, and rambles over slightly more than an octave.  As that stretch is over the scale's IV chord it is squarely in lydian="Simpsons" mode. Feel the lovely tinkle when G F# and C notes clash together, which they do at both ends of the two bars.

On inner row you also can do the 'B's' initial EF#GF#E note run, either rocking the bellows playing on the G row, or better* against simple Cpull bass, taking the Gpull note on the D row.  (There's also a fairly easy pull triplet EF#(GAG)3F#E)

That sort of thing just isn't available on outer row. The issue is that your IV chord: G is only available on the push.  But you'll need pull notes, especially C# and E for embelishment and tune.  Unless you play on upper octave of the box things are even worse whan you come back down the scale toward the low D button.

Extraordinary that Maxou has written such a chord based tune for an instument with no chords (Hurdy Gurdy) Chris

*Anyone who hasn't yet found EF#G or GF#E as a pure pull run - here's your chance!  It is quite the must useful note run I've ever found on a melodeon!  Try it on STP too, allows an E,D,C bass run 8)

Please don't give up yet (and never chuck a Tommy). This tune is much easier if you play it cross-row.

Surely not LDT!  You've got 4 weeks to go - take it small steps at a time.

What's not to like? For the second day of the challenge it's a very able attempt  (:)

Stick with it girl.

I try to avoid the D row as I find it does my brain in..I have to write down the buttons and pushes and pulls..I've only just had the G row 'click' in my head. And I really don't get the rythum of this tune.

This tune is much easier if you play it cross-row.

This is one of those tunes where some phrases are best suited to being played on the D row, whereas most of the tune sits comfortably on just the G row. Try playing bars 5-7 of the B music on the D row for example. Quite a lot of tunes supposedly in G play more a lot more easily if you change rows for certain phrases - Chris Wood's 'Mrs Saggs' being another example... and while I'm thinking of CW/AC tunes, 'When Chloe' does too.

Cheers,

Clive

I have to write down the buttons and pushes and pulls..

I've learned some tunes myself doing *exactly* that. It's a great way of learning tunes with fingering that you'd never play in a million years if left to yourself... and it doesn't take too long before you've learned the fingering and can throw your fingering notes away... and congratulations, your playing technique has just jumped forward.

Stick with it... you'll pick up a lot from learning this tune.

Cheers,

Clive

Wott!!! LDT you can't give up after just one day. :o :o
You're a real encouragement to us  beginners. Making a video and putting it on You tube was really difficult for me, but I thought LDT does it so I can do it!!

If you give up so easily we'll all be at it. :(

You're doing great for a day 1 recording. Try watching this video (mentioned earlier) of the Mazurka Ecoliers des St. Genest. You can even turn off the sound and play along. It really helps watching dancers to get that mazurka feeling.

Actually LDT I thought that this recording was very good - sure you'll fit the basses in at some point - but in fact they're not so important - it's the tune that's the key on this one, and I think you just about nailed it. So keep practising - forget about about um-pahs - and just start to fit some bass in when you feel like it. You've really improved and come so far in such a short time - don't let this one beat you.  (:)

Sarah, you're going to Whitney soon...if there's a spare moment, then I'm sure there will be some others there, especially from here, who will give you some support with this tune if you want it  (:)

Yeah, come on Sarah, that's brilliant. Forget the basses and keep on with the right hand.
I'm really impressed.

I still haven't learned the tune and it's already 2nd November!
