I was wondering....what about a 'fan' page for melodeon.net on facebook? I thought I'd ask first then try and make one unless Theo would like to do it?

Can you explain what you see as the benefits of doing this?

Directing more people to the forum ( I know some other forums who have pages and have got more members from having a page), plus if there are forum members on Facebook, you can say 'hi' on there. And...coz its fun.

Well I want nothing to do with Facebook.
Do we need more traffic? Everyone is finding their way here sooner or later anyway.
And personally I would view it with the jaundiced eye of an old fart if some of the action and interaction between members were moved away from here.

I'm in My experience with such pages is that very little activity takes place on them but more people do get drawn into the forum because of them. And Steve, fora always need more traffic. Fact of their existence.

Don't be scared. You don't have to join the fan page...or facebook, its just for those who are already on there. And it isn't a forum...its more a 'promotional link'.

I absolutely agree, Steve. Why spoil a great forum by diluting it with summat else? (Sorry, Sarah )

*bangs head against wall* For the last time it is NOT a forum! It is basically a page with a link to the forum and a discription. Which you can 'tick' to show you are a fan. Honestly I give up!

Hey Sarah, that will be nice when you stop. But you know I read some Googled explanations about FB fan pages and the description clearly suggested that they do indeed act as a kind of discussion forum. The less I have to do with Facebook, even indirectly in a way such as you propose, the better for me. But I'm only one person who's not keen on the idea. Let's hear from those who think it would be cool, or whatever. And yes, ukebert, of course forums need new blood. But there doesn't seem to me much of a shortage around here, does there?

I just wanted to be able to declare that I'm a fan on my FB page and I can't do that unless theres a fan page. Groups on FB have a discussion area but I've yet to find a forum element to FB fan pages. To put it in context its like wearing a badge with the forum name and url on and being told that badges will dilute the forum. I wish I'd never mentioned the idea!

Don't despair, but hope you're banging your head in time! Maybe a way of getting a tempo embedded!!
I think it's a good idea as a headliner (if that's the right term) for the forum but I don't know much about Facebook. Maybe with some interesting vids (best TOTMs) and info to interest them in the melodeon.net site Most of the sites I've seen for musicians are on Myspace. Normally I'd click on the persons website link after viewing their 'space' for more info on them.

Fan pages do have incredibly simplistic, limited forum-like software. I have never heard of them ever being used as one, a fan page is just a way of saying that one is a fan of something.
And the forum is certainly thriving at the moment, but the more people we get involved the better. I've been in fora which have previously thrived and then slid into obscurity because people didn't realise the relative impermanence of the genre.

Bear in mind, the more subscribers to this forum , the less likely you can book yourself on the workshop you want at next year's MAW .

I'm on your side, Sarah!!! I think it would be a great idea. Facebook functions in a completely different way to a forum like this, and would be a nice addition to the meodeon.net presence on the web. I love facebook - I don't get why so many people are scared of it. They're probably the same people who originally thought this new interweb lark was all a bit unnecessary and wouldn't last...
