Does anyone have the dots/abc for this tune? Brass Monkey just came up on my iPod and I really want to learn it now! Thanks.  :||:

It's a great tune! No dots, I'm afraid but here's what it says on the sleeve notes of my Brass Monkey CD:

'One of several unusual and compelling tunes taken from the playing of John Stickle, the Shetland fiddler, who was recorded in 1947 by Patrick Shuldham Shaw. A selection of Stickle's music was published in the Journal of the English Folk Dance and Song Society in 1968.'

So that looks like your source for the music.

There's some more information on the fiddler's companion, but also no dots.

I expect this to be a Tune of the Month candidate now!  ;)

Enjoy!

It's a great tune, which I love from Brass Monkey, and which is played alot at the Ryburn Sessions. But...no good for those without accidentals on their boxes, to give the F natural (and this note fair sets the the 'tone' of that part of the music).

Whoops...before I get 'picked up' on that last Post...ie those who have D/G boxes, where F natural is an accidental (I think :-\) - I certainly don't have it on the box I take out most often.

You're right about the F natural, Diane. Even on D/G boxes which do have an F natural accidental, it's usually in the wrong octave.

However, if you transpose the entire tune upwards into D major, the accidental becomes C-natural, which of course is available on the G-row of a D/G box.

Here's the transposed ABC....

It will sound a little on the squeaky side played up here, so if you've got a 3-voice box (MML), use the 3rd voice to make it sound more comfortable.

Never seen so many notes, and it swings wildly from 5/2 to 2/2 to 3/2 meter. Uses accidentals we don't have  ???  Ah, just spotted the wink!

It's a great tune, which I love from Brass Monkey, and which is played alot at the Ryburn Sessions.

Interesting.  What key do Ryburn actually play it in (and are we talking the 'Bridge')? Chris

Good work, Steve! I'd not thought of starting it on the D row - as it's always played from the G row when I hear it (perhaps the deeper sound gives it a bit more 'majesty'?). On a 3 voice box, that F natural - although, as you say, in the wrong octave - doesn't sound out-of-place-squeaky with the 3rd voice in IMO.

It works well from the D row, I think - as you say, with the 3rd voice in. Means you can also stay on the same bass note for that awkward run, if you play it on the G row - whereas, the other way, you're flitting about awkardly, for it to sound OK.

So, yes, TOTM possibilities, as not inherently a difficult tune, due to the meter (?) - apart from that 'run' if done from G, and just a couple of row crossings needed from D.

apparently Stickle was a German sailor who was shipwrecked and washed ashore, supposedly clutching his fiddle, on the Shetlands.  he married and settled there.
