Tune of the Month for December 2009 - Princess Royal
« on: November 23, 2009, 12:04:45 AM »

And December's winner, by a long way, is Princess Royal!

Courtesy of steve_freereeder, here are 3 videos of this wonderful tune being played:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JnidJaav68o
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lQq6R7t8rm0
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KvJsbQySJiQ

It's a flexible tune, coming in many different versions, in both major and minor keys. All are welcome and encouraged, as indeed are ... erm ... creative interpretations! The major version is probably the version you're most likely to see in typical English music sessions and when used to accompany Morris, but minor versions are also played frequently, particularly in specific Morris traditions.

As ever, beginners particularly welcome and will receive plenty of encouragement; and it's always interesting seeing what more experienced players do to these tunes too.

Cheers,

Clive

Example ABC's to follow...

Good, good.... However you are tripping up on the little quick descending phrase on bar 6, and other places where that phrase occurs.
You play it better on your original recording here:

I had more time for that recording, and the house to myself. ;)

I was 'rushing' because I had limited time to get it recorded before someone walked in and started making noise/talking to me/wanting to clean/generaly causing a disturbance.

Right.
From being one of the last in November to one of the first in December.
Thought I'd get this out of the way pretty sharpish. Faults and all. To give hope to all the youngsters out there. Lets face it. Even I can do better than this. So's now I can concentrate On Foul Weather Call and the Minor versions of PR.

I have a copy of this tune with Em and Am chords. So how do I play Am on a box that only has Amaj? Both my G/C and D/G boxes only have one minor bass - Emin on the D/G and Am on G/C.

Usually , if you can't remove the thirds , A fundamental with C Chord , giving Am7.

1. play A bass only
2. play ACE buttons on the right end on pull
The C is the important one to give it minorness
3 play AC and E basses together - bit low but it works
4 brazenly play Em chord with an A bass (bit jazzy)
5 tape over the 'thirds' (middle notes) in your left end
6 See above

My new box has no 3rds in the chords at all - just tonic and 5th - I don't miss them at all. My basic chords are neither minor or major!

A fundamental with C Chord , giving Am7.
Do you mean when playing the Chord press two buttons with one hit on the bass side?
That is, left hand middle finger hitting the A bass (outer button on 2nd button row) and ring finger the C chord button (inner button on the 3rd bass button row)?

Here's my first effort at this tune.
Audio only I'm afraid. No camera - just as well really.

Played on the good old Hohner Pokerwork in D/G which I think suits this tune really well.

Rousing, musical, enjoyable version, Steve. I especially appreciated the quote of "America" at 2:25...used to be our national anthem, you know.  (:) Thanks!!

As predicted by Clive here are some ABCs courtesy of the Morris Ring's ABC site

Bog Standard Version from Bledington Morris Tradition:

A pedant writes...

... um, the Bledington version is in Gm. The nearest thing to the bog standard session tune is from Abingdon.
