Playford
« on: December 31, 2009, 02:19:44 PM »

Speaking of Playford reminded me of a couple of pages of links to the Library of Congress copies of two versions of Playford that I found some time ago on a German dance site:

The second page, 'Playford 1728' is no longer on the site. I made a copy at the time, attached.

Thanks. I went on it looking for a tune called Barham Down which I heard Sam Sweeney and Hannah James playing at a session the other night.  They said it was Playford.  It wasn't on that list.

Anyone any idea where I can find it please?

It's intriguing if you have the Faber hardcopy Playford CDM that such a high proprortion of the well known Playford tunes are on the first few pages.....

Thanks Lester That's in 6/8 and not the tune in 3/2 with the same name
interesting

Here is a YouTube clip of the 3/2 by Elke Baker on fiddle

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xu_QKs4m07A&feature=related

Incidentally the second one she plays sounds something like Winster Gallop in the first part ,wandering between 3/2 and 4/4.  I wonder when the shift happened so that 3/2 became less favoured.

BTW Geoff Wright worked out the dots for the 3/2 in D
