The phrase "chickbox" certainly presents an interesting comment on the nature of the melodeon/accordion. I used to be an avid cyclist and often wound up in sports clinics for one injury or another. It amazed me that there were usually more musicians than athletes. The specific injuries were interesting but the usual answer was "if you play the violin you can't avoid this." You could do particular exercises to deal with the problem but the way of playing was as it was. With the melodeon there are so many variations in terms of size. I play a small box and thus weight is not an issue. Also I play sitting down, Irish style, so the only real strength I need is in my left arm. I am a very large man--height not weight--but almost sixty with various beginnings of arthritis--a good part of which goes back to the cycling injuries--and I don't think I could handle something very heavy. I suppose the Cairdin mini could be a "chick box" but it certainly suits me.

OK OK I apologize
I'll just call it a "girly" box.
Is that better ?

Who are you calling "girly"? As an 18 stone married father of two of advanced age I kind of think I am not an archetypal "girly" but I do play a Tommy. I have never had air problems with it and have played it vigorously for both morris and in my band.

I am curious as to what "girly" or "chick box" really mean, other than the obvious, small and light? Which is by no means an accurate stereotype, I have seen millions of women strapped to wardrobes bigger than they are and I have seen strapping young with tiny little boxes. I would class myself in the latter bracket, I would really like a Lilliput or similar

That's just reminded me of Lester's old avatar with him playing his Mignon that, with the absence of anything else for scale, could have been a photo of a giant playing a normal sized melodeon.

Just as Miatas and the New Age Mini is a "chic" car or a "girly" car.. so goes the Tommy
Where as the original Mini Cooper and Lotus Elan were not chickified ( I used to work on both )
I suggest that one might need to turn in your "man card" to buy or play a Tommy

I've been playing a Tommy (which was on loan, but I'll be posting up for sale soon) quite happily, and quite oblivious of any slur to my manhood it might be causing.
The treble end is good, 3rd voice is nice, I would rather have a 4th button start and loose the dog whistles up the far end. The stepped keyboard isn't quite to my liking.
The B fundamental on the bass end is pitched in the wrong octave in my opinion - its way to high compared to the others on the box, and other B bass notes on different boxes.
A few tweeks and it could be perfect, but I wouldn't pay £2999 or whatever crazy new price they are now for one.
That's my 2p worth anyway.

I can't believe I'm reading some of these comments in 2010! Or are these just ironic and I've undergone a "sense of humour" by-pass? Personally, I play a Tommy. And a Giordy. And a big, bulky 2.5 row....I use them for different things, and don't change gender or sexual preference each time I pick up a different instrument. At least I don't think I do(Sudden moment of self-doubt)...And as for switching between the uke and the double bass....now then I get real identity confusion....
Cheers, Guy

Trouble is that trying to pack a lot into a small case, like the Tommy, inevitably leads to some compromises, eg fewer, or smaller bass reeds, and simply having a lot of reeds packed into a small space can make a big difference to the sound.
