If anyone is near Bedford/Northampton/MK, Messers Squeezy and Boden are playing at the Stables, Wavendon next week -

Wed 3 Mar, 8:00pm.

Have just got a couple of tickets for myself and the junior banana  Grin, so not yet sold out  Huh?.

(Not at all impressed with the various charges added on by the Stables though - 2 x £14 tickets cost £33 somehow! Booo!  Angry )

I've just got tickets to see not only S&B but also Faustus playing at an intimate little venue in Oxfordshire on 15 May.
If anyone's interested I can pass on the details (don't have them to hand at the mo) ...
(If I should post this in a separate thread forgive my ignorance, just let me know.)

Cheers

As a follow up to this, I did indeed go to see John and Jon last night in Milton Keynes.

It really was excellent. I have to admit that I went to see and listen to the tunes more than the singing, as I am not normally a fan of folk singing. But I actualy enjoyed the songs very much as well, which surprised me! I also took my 17 year old son, who is learning the melodeon at the moment (poor devil, I am teaching him!). He too enjoyed the whole concert, which I think surprised him as well, and both of us found the box playing pretty inspiring. Both musicians are top notch, the sound was excellent and the banter in between songs was amusing.

If anyone is wavering about going to a Spiers and Boden gig, then I'd strongly recommend that you go.  mel2

Just one thing that I need to know. Squeezy, if you read this, I know you're an Oxford boy, there were several football references - can we count you as a 'celebrity supporter' of the mighty Yellows? I'd much rather have you as one rather than Timmy 'Wack-A-Day' Mallett!

Yes - I have to admit to being an Oxford fan (one of my great uncles used to play for Headington United as it was called then).  I haven't been to see many games since they moved the ground from Headington though, there's just not quite as much attraction in going to a new all-seater stadium to watch them play Dagenham & Redbridge ...  Cry

I couldn't believe it when they got fellow fan and idiot Timmy Mallett to come on the pitch during the warm-ups in the '90s - it was obviously a slippery slope downwards after we beat Man U in Alex Ferguson's first game in charge (had to get that in)

Anyway - thanks for all the nice comments about the gig, Luminaire in Kilburn, London tonight, where my mum's side of the family come from.  If you're a melnetter come up and say hello at the CD table!

Cheers

On the subject of music  and Oxford United  I vaguely remember a song  which the BBC broadcast on  Folk on 2 in the 1980's  - must be the only song which had lines praising Robert Maxwell
" We needed a miracle & look what we got - a friendly magnate in a furry hat"
&  the chorus went
"Robert Maxwell we love you , United are back in Division 2".
They don't write em like that anymore

I spoke to the organiser earlier today about this, apparently only a few tickets are remaining, but it should be a cracking event.
From the Oxonfolk website:

Spiers & Boden and Faustus in concert.  St Mary's Church, Bampton, Oxon  7.30pm.  real ale bar.
Tickets £12.50 per person available by calling Jackie on 01993 850760
any and all profits to the Transplant Fund, Churchill Hospital, Oxford; and Spajer's,  Bampton

to melodyman:

Sorry - didn't mean to be dismissive of your team  Evil.  But if you saw the one game at the Kassam I'm talking about then you'd know that it was a dismal affair between two teams who should have known better and it put me off for good.  That's actually the only game I have seen them play since we got relegated from Division 4 or whatever they call it now... if it was at the Manor which had a lot more character I would be far more likely to be enticed back I have to say.

to pbsalt:

Maxwell was there when I started going to games as a 10 year old.  I remember the furry hat well!  Only he went to Derby and left his son in charge of Oxford.  Surprisingly our best players started to get sold to to Derby at cut price rates about 2 weeks later!  But my favourite memory of being at a football match was when the Maxwell empire had started to collapse and we got to play Derby at home.  We started to sing "we hate maxwell and we hate maxwell etc." - the Derby fans then replied by joining in and everyone cheered.  Then the fans started singing "we hate Maxwell more than you" and so it carried on, no-one was really watching the game which was a bit dull.

Part of me now thinks that 10,000 people making up and singing songs (albeit very simple ones and not very musical), but singing their hearts out and communicating simple feelings across the length of a football pitch is probably as close to a real folk music experience that I have ever had.  Which is good because it makes this post not completely off topic, although it's close!

I've been once to the Kassam, was in the East stand, facing the fence / car park - very atmospheric! To be honest I always preferred a trip to watch Swi***n, who always seemed to be more entertaining.

Wash your mouth out and go and stand in the corner, and think about what you've said. Rather watch S******n indeed!

talking of football Harry Cox was John Terry's great Grandad.
What songs would he have sung for him?

Wonderful Spiers and Boden gig in Bury last night (5th March). However, Bury could only manage a goal-less draw against Dagenham & Redbridge this afternoon. Can't have everything, I suppose.
