On a related point, I was considering making another video of Schottische a Bethanie, but slowing it down and breaking it up to show the detail of how I play it since people seem to like my version. It's not actually that hard to play once you know how! Would that be helpful to anyone?

Clive

OK, folks - here they are. 3 videos covering my version of Schottische a Bethanie and how I play it. Hope you find it useful:

Part 1: Fingering and Chords
Part 2: Schottische rhythms, ornamentations on treble and bass
Part 3: More ornamentation - held notes; held chords; pulsed basses

Now please remember these show simply how I play SaB, not how it must be played by everyone. I firmly believe that there is no correct way to play a tune; you can play it however you want, so if you want to ignore a piece of advice and do something differently, please do.

For example, for this tune I don't play phrases completely 'in chords' like the method Chris shows in his very helpful notes - I play phrases all on the same row, but I do switch row for different phrases of music (I'll show you what I mean in part 1). Is that the right way to play this tune? Well, Chris and my techniques are *both* fine. Different effects, different strengths, different end result. Do it how it seems most natural to you.

Enjoy and please, please, please, post some videos/mp3's yourself to let us know how you're getting on!

Clive
PS: Yes, I know I'm looking off to the right in the videos, and not at the camera - that's where the microphone is!  Roll Eyes

I've only now had a chance to view these, so just wanted to say thanks.  I think I've picked up some really useful stuff as a result of these - particularly in the last two parts.  Very worthwhile indeed.

Clive,

Thankyou so much for taking the time to break down your incredible version of this tune.  I've never heard anyone do that wonderful back beat shuffle before and I've actually been able to learn to do it from your demonstration video.  This forum has been an incredible resource for me.  I'm going to have to get a recorder one of these days so I can post something.  Thanks again.

Michael

Great to hear - thanks for the kind comments!

Cheers,
Clive

Like Michael - thanks to your videos I think I'm getting there! For some reason, I'm thowing in Am and a Bmajor along the way as well as dropping a few notes,  but there's a definite back beat Cool Will put up video soon.

Here is my hesitant version of The Plane Tree.  I am trying to use the air button on a note and not between notes, but it still sounds loud.  Have only just got the hang of the tune, basses may come later.

Hi guys, I'm new to this forum and this is my first entry for tune of the month. I went for the jig option in the end, played a little on the fast side-not used to playing in front of a camera.

Not all that hesitant, to my ears, but tuneful and lyrical actually. Good one. Thanks.

Wow. Intense, vibrant and with a lovely sure touch. Particularly impressed with the horn section at the bass end.

Hesitant? Not really! Nicely played and well done!

My rendition of the Schottische a Bethanie. It's played multitracked on two Saltarelle melodeons, a Connemara III and a L'Elfique. First part played on the Saltarelle Connemara using just the bass voice, then once through with the L'Elfique, and finally with the L'Elfique and an additional single voice from the Connemara.

PDF should be ok, but if it's an image any reason not to post as jpg which is likely to be smaller and less likely to exceed the size limit (which I can't recall at the moment)

Lovely fluid version and you nicely answer the question of why I had a half heard version 'rather like yours' in my head. Your mike seems to have picked up mostly right end.  I'm having difficulty fitting the chords as written - three of the phrases only have 4 bars and I don't understand "." comma as notation - is it a rest/pause? If you could jpg I'm sure all will be clear. [Ahah! see edit below]  Wink

Em _ | Am Bm | C _ | Em Bm  | Em _ |  D _  | C _ | Bm Em | x2

Em _ | D  Bm  | C _ | Em F#m | Em _ | G B7 | C _ | Bm Em  | x2

Aha, I cracked the pdf attachment.

Chris, I meant the '/' symbol to mean 'ditto', and the comma to represent a bar line - I hope that's clearer, but the pdf should resolve it anyway.

Also, Chris, I'm afraid that's the sound of my box - the bass is very soft, and I find I prefer it that way now.  In fact I even angled the box slightly LH towards the Zoom H2 to bring out the bass a bit more on the recording.

Hi Nick, I enjoyed your you-tube. I also enjoyed your live medley of this with jiggery pokerwork at the Green man at Thriplow Daffodil fest on saturday. Small world.

Thanks to all who have posted, wonderful stuff,  but there is a lack of novices crashing about here.

So here is my first effort on this really nice tune.

NICE Cheesy Please be emcouraged. Solid gig rhythm and fluid left end. It kept driving right through. If you are really a novice - I think you'll do well on this instrument. i also liked the backdrop of the stove, but that's nothing to do with melodeonism
