I'm thinking of a family trip to Shrewsbury this year rather than Towersey. Apart from the Artist line up, anyone have any comments, comparisons regarding general set up and facilities.

Cheers

I mssed 2009 but I went in '08 and it was really without fault. Looks that it's still in the same bend of the Severn as before -  frankly a top quality situation on the edge of both town and country.  Won't comment on the line up - that seems to be Bellowhead and full supporting programme ... whereever  Huh?

IMHO worth going 'at least once' as an adventure.

The morris team that I play for has been invited, so I'll be there. We've not been before, do most things take place on site or does music get played out in the town pubs?

I've been to Shrewsbury for the last two years and absolutely love it.  One of the best festivals on the circuit for camping and the whole event is extremely well organised.

The Morris side for which I attempt to play has also been invited, so I hope to see some of you there.

The morris team I play for is also going to be at Shrewsbury, with a bit of luck, who are we all? Perhaps a pint or two could be arranged?

I am currently trying to decide between Shrewsbury, Whitby and Towersey. Assuming that I had the money to visit any of them...

Sounds good - and a music session together wouldn't go amiss. For identification purposes, I am the six-footer with a three-row Castagnari on my chest and a bandana (or should that be bandage?) on my head.

Sounds good to me. If Bob Ellis is there with Crook, we had an enjoyable day with them at the end of last year up in Ribblesdale, it would be good to meet up again. I'm musician with Rivington, women's NW from Bolton. Do you think that there is any danger of the morris teams going anywhere near the sort of establishment where beer can be bought........? Does a wild bear..........(etc)..

ahah - i'm also going to Shrewsbury festival this year - Family holiday (big house already booked), timed just to cover the festival (and the following week).  We must definately arrange a session or two.

Actually went to Shrewsbury town for the first time a couple of weeks ago to an "in aid of Haiti" concert arranged by the brother of a friend the town looks very interesting. No melodeons that time though (too many guitars!).

I missed the day in Ribblesdale with Rivington due to my wife's illness, but everyone said it was a very enjoyable event. I think there is a slight chance that Crook might be found somewhere near a hostelry serving refreshments at some time during Shrewsbury (and every other festival we attend!) I look forward to meeting up with folk from this forum at Shrewsbury...and at Upton, Furness, Sidmouth, Whitby and any other festivals we might attend. See you on Monday, Rees.

Me & the gang'll be there as usual.

We've done stewarding the last few years as none've us are millionaires!

The onsite seshes are brill, both the impromptu ones on the campsite & the ones in the bars & beertent.

I particularly enjoyed the 'beginners sessions' both for the opportunity to play along with a diversity of others & to learn many new tunes.

A superb & well organised event!

I have been going to Shrewsbury (and Bridgnorth before it) for a number of years.  It is essentially a single site festival with a few concert items in pubs in the town, plus morris in the town during the day.  The sessions are excellent as said before, plenty of space in both main bar areas for multiple seesions to take place.  Also as said above, the beginners and intermediate 'organised' sessions are excellent, with the tune book being published well before the event.  The beginners session is particularly good with tunes being played slowly and multiple time through for the benefits of those who really are learning.

We have stewarded for the past few years, and this year are invited as part of our morris team - Wharfedale Wayzgoose  -  so we will be stewarding on Friday morning getting everyone in - and Monday getting everyone out and playing and dancing on the Saturday and Sunday

Generally an excellent festival. Performers are particularly well treated; we had a lovely time there last year with Pig Dyke Molly, and the year before as a duo doing our songs-and-tunes stuff.

Look out for some good English music sessions at the Britannia Inn, next to the sorting office near the station.
Much of the festival is on site, except for the majority of display dancing which is in the streets where it should be.
Don't camp anywhere near the main stage if you want somewhere quiet in the evenings...
