One for a bit of discussion, I've posted this here because it explicitly concerns the Buy & Sell section but if the moderators feel it more appropriate for general discussion...

On this board people have advertised concertinas, piano accordions and CBAs which although not melodeons/diatonic bisonoric button accordions are broadly in the same family, (although I do seem to remember audio gear being sold as well). I was wondering how the site moderators and users felt about the possibility of members advertising other non-free reed instruments for sale here?. A lot of board members do seem to play other instruments and I've found this a very useful and friendly way to sell boxes and related bits, other instruments would of course be bound by the usual rules and sales would result in a donation to the site but I'm mindful that a possible deluge of fiddles and guitars might not sit well with others.

What does everyone think?.

I think: If the the seller is a forum member, it is ok, expecially if the instruments can be used in a similar context like the melodeons.

In that case there should be an extra Buy & Sell section for non-melodeon instruments.

I've never been confused or irritated by an inundation of non-melodeon instruments on this site, and I'm not an admin but I don't see a problem with a variety of instruments/equipment existing in the buy/sell pages.

An extra section for non-melodeon instruments seems unnecessary to me, as they come up infrequently enough as it is. If there were an extra forum for those, I'd think it could attract blow-in traffic that has nothing to do with melodeons.

Agreed - and would be my concern.

My thought is that as a percentage helps defray Theo's costs then it seems fair enough but it should be within this section so as to prevent "blow ins".

If I wanted to buy for example a guitar, I'd prefer to buy from a Melnet member than somewhere like eBay or the local classified ads, so I'm in favour of allowing the sale of other instruments. Likewise PA gear etc.
I think ads should only be accepted from members who have to some extent established themselves on the forum, though. Most people agree it's OK for people to come in as New Starters to sell their melodeons, but it's a bit much if they sign up just to try to sell their old electronic keyboards.*

* If anyone is looking for one of these, I believe we have one lurking in the garage somewhere.... Evil

That's more or less why I started this thread, I've had a Fylde guitar hanging on the wall of a music shop on an informal basis for over a year now. I'll be moving to a different part of the country before the end of the year so that arrangment will have to come to an end and I really need to sell it so the obvious, and highly undesireable, option is eBay so I'm thinking of alternatives, even longshots like squeezebox-orientated sites. Selling a few small bits and buying and selling a fairly expensive box has been an enjoyable and painless experience compared to eBay and it's much nicer for any costs to go to the upkeep of a site like this.

...and you can trust me, I'm a Respected Sage, a customer of Theo's and I've met Rees. Grin

Yes... don't really want a deluge of random gear to sift through. But nevertheless, it would be useful - salvaging the outlay on any abortive forays into other esoteric contraptions that didn't work out... and looking to realise a bit of dosh for other bellows-y things...

Amongst the hoard here, there's a hardly used ice-white Fender FV1 sitting round looking for a new home...

I would say : Great. All sales to include a contribution to melnet, can only be a good thing.  But perhaps have a Buy and Sell (non Melodeon) thread? That way, you don't have to wade through off topic sales unless you want to.

Cheers,

For two reasons I don't think a separate forum for other sales is a good idea.  First it makes it look as if we want to encourage more for sale and wants of other things,  secondly its starts to make us look like a classified ads site which we are not.

I think if members want to post the occasional advert for a guitar, a bit of PA equipment or other vaguely related items then thats fine.   I can't see it getting out of hand, if it does we can think again.  Just keep of the type of thing found in spam please.
