Liverpool Commando Trad
« on: September 15, 2010, 12:20:37 PM »

A opportunity to catch passers by unawares and amaze them with the wealth of traditional musical talent and tunes, planned on the lines of:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ni3x-uwAumo

Subscribe here:

http://eepurl.com/2zuY

We need lots of musicians, supporters (who might dance?), step/clog dancers (not teams though), and filmers.

Perhaps some members who are also members of parallel forums (concertinas, fiddle, whistle, etc) could post some details on their forum if applicable.  PM or email me if you would like some suggested text.

Hi Folks

Some more details and thoughts:

1. The date is Sat October 23rd, we are hoping for 2 "events" in the morning and 2 in the afternoon, with lunch (and a play?) in a pub in between.  To allow for inclement weather we are hoping that some will be inside.

2. At the moment we have Liverpool One signed up.  On the walkway between George Henry Lee and Debenhams on the ground floor.  This is ideal as is tiered so we can have musicians on two levels on both sides.  This actually gives us some inside and outside as the area is partially covered. We are pursuing a venue in Church St as well.  We do need to get "permission", I don't think it invalidates the surprise to the general public.

3. We need to have Public liablility insurance we are researching the cheapest option.  We'll have a wip round on the day for it.

4. We have about 16 people signed up, 6 or 7 melodeons (some could be concertinas), a flute, a couple of fiddles and a couple of guitars and a whistle. I think we need about 45-50 signed up so that we get 30-40 on the day.

5. We also have a local clog/step dancer who will come and dance.

6. We need more musicians, possibly a few more clog/step dancers (but not teams) and some people to film the event.  Also any hangers on who could be cajoled into helping the general public do a sort of circassian circle type dance towards the end.  Please get anyone who is interested to subscribe on

http://eepurl.com/2zuY

You could forward this email on if you wanted.

7. The actual tunes will need to be agreed with the dancers, so no real news on that yet, but they will be well known ones.  I plan to record them and post them on youtube so as we get a feeling for the speed as well.

8 I think the whole event will take about 30-40 minutes, turn up 15 minutes before hand, arrange oneself in a good position, I'll start it off with a couple of close by musicians, then let it spread, so people should not get the instruments out until they at least see others playing or about to play.  Play for 10 minutes, then  another 10 minutes to pack up and clear off.
Dancers should not start until 2-3 minutes in.  After 4-5 minutes we could then have "dance encouragers" to get passers by dancing as well.

I hope everyone is as enthusiastic as we are.

Here is a link which will give you access to all the 6 Commando Trad events in Canada.  Well worth a look.

What Joyous music.  Do you intend using Quebecois music?

I look forward to seeing the results - it's a fantastic idea and I hope you have tremendous success with it.

Interested to hear how you keep the timing all together.

good grief no, we'll use some solid English tunes which will be well known by all the musicians.

Thanks for your good wishes.

You should come to Québec sometime Kautilya. You will quickly find out that nobody speaks English in a Peter Sellers accent. I have never heard any Québécois say "Ze" or "zee".

Imagine a Frenchman writing a parody of American speech where he had people people in Harlem saying "jolly good fun, old bean, what" - the effect would be analogous.

"meant to me"
see! Even doG ees now riting in zee secret code - as meester Ryall as alredee warnedd us, Sheltenham and ze Concertina Intl Association aare leestening in!

Hi Kautilya,  I usually feel I'm loosing the will to live before I get far into your posts!

But please, I would really prefer not to be referred to as "doG"  I think that particular joke has worn very very thin.

This style of parody of foreigners was very popular after the War but has faded out of British wit in recent years, perhaps  due to EU engagement, and I think cheap travel. Actually I think our European neighbours used to do the same to us -  references to "phlegme britannique" from France and the BBC man "speaking with a hot potato in his mouth" seem much rarer than in my teens  :Ph

Need to get myself to Québec and wrap my ears around that accent!  Or Louisiana (my one row's in C) - when DL Manard played in France  - couldn't understand a word

To veer just slightly back towards topic - "foreign" here in Liverpool means something completely different - a "cash" job  :|glug

Absolutley!
On a lighter note, would be great if you could point me to somewhere for the score for "Gens du Pays". I have had no luck as I said.
tks!

Nickel! And it's in easy peasy C too - sooper.
And to go with the score - Reverse Trad Dango people version:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-SVM0423Eog

slow orchestral playalong version with an uplifting octave shift in middle:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F99LF47Zu08

I sense a Clive, Sandy version coming on hopefully.... (:) (:)

to get this back on track......

Can someone point me in the direction of a fiddle forum and also one for (!) banjos, whistles and perhaps guitars which might be inhabited by folk inclined players of those instruments who could be interested in this event?

I think the concertina.net forum has already been covered.

I've now got about 25 sign ups (although not all are able to attend), I really do want about 40 signed up, so that we can be sure of about 30 participants.

You could try my mate Julian Taylor based in Balckburn so the right part of the country,  he teaches and leads a group of fiddle players.

The Lakeland Fiddlers run by Carolyn Francis.  Carolyn plays pipes too and I've also seen her with a one-(wo)man band outfit, and would be great for this sort of gig.

If you google 'fiddle forum' the first result should be the fiddle and alternative strings forum. Try that one.
