Defeating gravity
« on: January 31, 2011, 06:02:17 PM »

I need a way to defeat gravity. Every time I play my 1row 4 stop I barely get 3 notes out before my left hand has slid up away from the air 'spoon' and basses. Other than taping my hand in place is there a solution?

Is the strap on your bass end tight enough?

My other melodeon's a fiddle, but one of my Hohners has six strings! I also play a very red Hawkins Bazaar in C and a generic Klingenthaler spoon bass in F.!! My other pets (played) are gobirons - Hohner Marine Band in C, Hohner Tremolo in D and a Chinese Thingy Tremolo in G.

Not anymore its stretched since I first had it. And I've only got small hands.

Try:
a) Make new screw holes in your bass strap to tighten it; you don't have to move the screw holes far to make a difference.
b) Put a piece of sponge inside the bass strap above your hand to keep it in position.

Inspired by an earlier thread along these lines I made a simple auxiliary strap that requires no modification to the instrument. It is simply an appropriate length of nylon web strapping material with a hole (made with a soldering iron to prevent fraying) through the two ends that "buttons" onto one of the feet. Actually, I made three before I got one the right length at a total cost of less than a dollar. In the summer when the humidity goes back up and my left hand has more traction on the case, I'll just unbutton it.

My Castagnari Max has a Velcro adjustable strap. You can buy them (should work on any any melodeon) at Charlie Marshall's.

I think I tried the loop strap method, but found that there's no substitute for having the main strap tight enough so your hand doesn't flap about in it, and when it's tight enough for that, you don't need the loop...

All answers involve DIY. I can't do DIY. My solution from other box doesn't work coz there is no feet to hook it round.
Why is the LH strap so long anyway? It should stop where your hand should be...no point of your hand being miles from the basses.

If you haven't solved it by the end of March bring it to Mendlesham M&M and I'll tighten the strap for you.

But for now,  can you manage scissors?   Yes?  Then find a couple of pairs of old (clean) thick socks, cut off the toes, and pull a sock over your wrist, you should be able to double it over once, or maybe twice.  Try playing the box, if the hand still won't stay in place put another sock over the first.  Keep adding more until your hand is secure.

If you can't find suitable old socks then buy some new ones. ;D

An excellent point.  Makers take note.  (:)

The problem with having a bass short strap is that it may be in the correct place for you but the wrong place for me, depending on many variables not least hand size/finger length.

I was thinking some kinda clip that could be attached to 'shorten' the strap at the right point for your hand.

If you are capable of making your own clothes (which I know you are), you can certainly undo two screws, make two new holes in the leather strap, and re-fix the screws.

LDT: But I don't have a screwdriver.
Me: Go out and buy, beg, borrow or steal one.
LDT: But how do I know what size to get?
Me: Take the melodeon to a DIY shop like Wickes, B&Q, Homebase, whatever they have in S-on-S. Show the screws to someone in the shop and say, "I want a screwdriver to fit these please".
Shop person: Certainly my Lady, I have just the thing over here......

etc.

A good alternative to socks is wrist sweat bands, available cheaply from sports shops; I use them with my Liliput which doesn't have an adjustable strap.

Actually I've never finished an item of clothing I've made from 'scratch'. I've got a regency dress half done sitting there, and a skirt I started but gave up on. If I mess up sewing I can just go out and but some more fabric....if I mess up with a box I can't afford to go out and buy a new one. Hense I'd rather give someone who knows what they are doing employment.

I do though have a cunning plan involving duct tape....

So why not finish them now?
Because I don't need the skirt anymore (the outfit it was supposed to go with as an underskirt is now 'too small') and as for the dress....I don't understand 'sewing patterns' written in gibberish. I need my mum to translate...and she is apparently 'busy'. And so it sits in the corner.

but that's going off topic.
