Old Grey P/S

Anyone want to hazzard a guess what this one will go for? No, I'm not thinking of bidding, I'll just dream on  :||:

It's the usual mix of "I know sweet FA about it, but I know its worth a fortune".  Take away the brand new bellows tape and straps and you've got a rather tatty old box with a bent, cracked grille.  OK, running repairs, scheduled maintenance, etc. but it still puts me on edge when anything for sale is recently tarted up and the seller is "selling for a friend - no questions".

looks to be legit with all the pictures and the seller feedback and that they require payment with paypal... oh no... what if the same thing happens to this box that happened to that violin someone bought on ebay and said wasn't the real goods - in order for the buyer to get their money back they had to destroy the violin... :(

I predicted over on the facebook Irish button accordion page that this box will top 8K British pounds - didn't one go for over 6K last summer?

Probably the best set of pictures I've seen of an old grey. Now that's how you sell an item. :||:

As much as I would love to get one of these.

1. Looks to have been dropped hard. grill including couplers is pushed in. missing screw seems an afterthought with that
2. Rust staining?
3. How bad is the face crack under the logo?

Looks like the buyer should be a person interested in a rehabilitation project.

A slight but significant clue to the general condition lies just above the 'p' of Soprani... where there's evidence of two holes... and another hole about an inch or two up... This leads me to conclude a bandsman's lyre has been fitted... which means this is an ex-marching band (Orange or Hibernian) instrument - i.e. for a larger part of it's life, it's been an 'outdoors' box...

With this in mind, I'd say that looks like new bellows, not just a re-tape...

Probably re-buildable, or useful for parts, but not the best example I've seen, to be honest... :|glug

Totally agree eejay! The 'no bass blocks' is a dead giveaway.

Hm, two thoughts,  Why sell an Irish box on German Ebay?  Second, it's either had a lot of screws in the case or woodworm.

Anything other than a grey P/S we'd be calling it crap and "spares or repairs" probably the former.

Condition: I don't see the main issues - with a good effort this box will surely play again, and will probably play well too. I've seen grey paolos in close-to-the-skip condition that I'd trade anything to get my hands on.

Price: The market will decide, I suppose. Just keep a few things in mind. This is not the most desired model, as it's a rather late grey one, with the round air-button, white-black-white piping, plain slottet grille with no "circle" in the middle, large bass buttons, and the "italia" badge. Apart from that, it's a 4 voice, not being as desired as the 3 voice. I still reckon it will get a good price, and I'm sure for someone out there, it's the bees knees!

The reeds look in very good nick.  Valves all lying completely flat suggest it has had a full reed overhaul very recently.

In a picture near the bottom of the series,  showing it with the extended bellows, the treble side and grille do not look so bad. I wonder if the curve that we see in the grille in other pics is partly due to a camera lens effect.

That accordion that Jackie is playing is not the same model as the paolo on ebay.
In fact I would say thats Tony MacMahons 3 VOICE that Jackie must have borrrowed at the Time.

Why does it have to be Tony's? Tony's box doesn't have that celtic deely on the grill, plus Jackie recorded and almost certainly toured with that box with DeDannan.

Thanks hibbs

Tonys box had and still has the celtic deely on the grill.
Jackie did play a grey paolo while on tour with de dannan but it was the blacky grey with white pipping. funny enough he sold it to charlie piggott, who later sold it to Charlie Harris. Both men have regretted since and this is the Grey paolo Charlie plays today.

Or here RTE TV50 Classic's The Green Linnet remembered the box appears with Tony in all 7 episodes currently available. Doesn't prove it was never owned by Jackie Daly though even though Tony McMahon was the producer I think on the clip Keithypete linked to I expect some one has the story. AtB mory nice early clip of Tony here  http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&feature=endscreen&v=LVisPKwtu4o
