Title: Poll: Tune of the Month for September 2012
Post by: Clive Williams on August 24, 2012, 11:15:07 PM
Hi folks, here's this month's quartet:

Soldier's Joy - In honour of DTN's fine demonstration of how to spice this old session standard up, here it is as you'd hear it in most sessions: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Sme1bst8oI ... and this is how DTN plays it: http://soundcloud.com/dtn-1/soldiers-joy . A tune you can do a *lot* with.

Walter Bulwer's No.2 - Another session classic, played here by the redoubtable Ed Rennie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E65vHX-5xcU

Go List for a Sailor - This song tune plays nicely on a 2 row (don't think it fits a 1 row [[[ EDIT - Just tried it, yes it does ]]] ) - very few versions of this on youtube from what I can see, but here's 2 versions as played by the early Albion Band: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FWxkzDTJxFA

Stool of Repentence - a jolly jig, again here played by the perfect source of playing videos, Ed Rennie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2bBZzMuwL4

Have fun folks - happy voting!

It is to be hoped that if Go Enlist wins people will restrict themselves to the traditional tune ie the A Music and the Slows and leave out all the dodgy made-up B musics that seem to be kicking around.   >:E

Bless you Lester, you're so innocent  ;D It'll make a nice 8 time waltz perhaps...

'tis up to you to provide the definitive version then Lester. I honestly wouldn't recognise the dodgy made up bits!

Well, at the risk of incurring Lester's wrath  ;) here's the distinctly dodgy and wonderful version of Enlist for a Sailor which we (Ouse Washes Molly) use for our dance 'Nelson'. As you will hear, the 'traditional' tune is in fact the B music of a rather splendid 32-bar hornpipe.  8)

The original version is of course a song, the verses of which are sung to a tune closely resembling the A-music as played by Ouse Washes Molly:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cDImbpWKHus
and
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPLjxK8iFoU

Lester's 'traditional morris version' is an interlude used between verses, and is the B-music as played by OWM.

For me, the melodic structure of the B-music (the morris tune) is such that when it is played on its own it doesn't make as much sense as it does when it follows the A-music. Playing the B-music on its own is like entering a room to find a conversation already going on: yes, it comes to a good ending but somehow you've missed the beginning of it - like starting the national anthem with 'Send her victorious...' But when the two musics are played together the A-music leads nicely into the B-music and the B-music leads back to the A-music. Nicely balanced.  (:)

Ultimately of course, there is no right or wrong way; anyone is free to play it any way they wish, depending on what their personal preferences are. If you want to play the morris version that's fine, but to claim that it is the only 'right' way of doing it is pushing things a little to far in my opinion. Sorry, Lester.

Think you missed the little  >:E in my original post which I thought highlighted the mischievousness of it.

Maybe it's the fact that I work in a hospital, but when I see the phrase "Stool of Repentance" I'm thinking of a day-after-a-curry stool of repentance.

It must be my archetype English mind but everytime I look at this title I chuckle. In fact it's the kind of title Bill Bailey would come up with.

Stool of repentance - odd title for a jolly jig. I guess that it refers to the special seat in a Scottish kirk where adulterers and other sinners were required to sit as public penance. The curry reference seems mild by comparison......

Not a contribution and not looking like making it to TOTM but  this is still one of my favourite versions of Soldiers Joy.  For sheer danceability/listenability it takes some beating ~ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gC5UckwvOUc&feature=related.  All that and some archive footage of Angel Morris Men.  Who could ask for more? (and that's a rhetorical question!)
