Title: Inside and Out... the Shand Morino
Post by: Owen Woods on January 14, 2013, 09:02:54 AM
Hi everyone,

I've just finished a blog post on the construction of the Shand Morino. This is an amazing instrument, hence why the post is so long! Stick with it though, because there are some fascinating things in there. Please let me know if there is any part that isn't clear and I will amend it.

Nice work Owen , exellent and comprehensive insight . I`d post this on the Accordion Forum too as the box`s following is at its strongest there

You may want to have a look at the Club Morino sometime as it managed to squeeze 5 voices into an even smaller space whilst using a lot of the tech from the Shand (2 rows of pallets for 3 rows of 3 voices, other 2 in a chamber) , the build quality is more Gola than Morino in the N version of the club too for some strange reason .

well done Owen!  As Adam has said see the  linked accordion forum for more comments etc.

At some point I probably will!

I can send you the pics you need , let me know. it`s the most beautifully made Hohner I`ve seen this side of a Gola (including other Morinos) , especially the (apparently) Chromed internal metalwork and the lovely woodwork on the reedblocks, soundboards, Pallets etc, the insides are far nicer to look at the than the outside ! . the reeds are almost touching in this also.

Owen - you're definitely becoming the Lloyd Grossman of the squeezebox world ...

... "over to Owen Woods as we go 'Through the Air Button' "

"naow ... who would live in an accordion like this?  David - it's over to you"

Pasta sauce comes next.

I enjoyed the article bdw, I'd never thought about the influence that some of the factors you mentioned would have on sound.

Finally found time to read it properly.
Great piece of descriptive writing, Owen.
But how do you follow that?
Or to paraphrase Squeezy, which air buttons are you planning to look through next?

Well there is one instrument that would beat it, but it's apparently very difficult to track down... probably there won't be another inside and out for a while though, in order to let everyone recover!

V unlikely - I mostly only have Hohners

Hmm, I thought he was thinking of Hohner but the only weird Hohners I can think of are the Morino Club (which I have) and the Preciosa (which I think he has already got) .  the rest are "normal" even the Ouverture-V is a standard design and has 5 voice pallets, the Corona-IIIR is merely a Club-IIIM with proper rows and the correct number of buttons on the top row, the Liliput like a Mini-2915 with as few extra buttons and an odd treble action.

The very popular Club ll/Erika has three rows but only two reed blocks.

So has the Liliput but they`re far from three full rows, it`s only 4 extra buttons which could have been added to the main rows if they`d wanted and didn`t mind a wider fingerboard (they`re better where they are of course)

Well, continuing the thread drift, here's a fairly unusual variant of the "rectangular-box" midsize Hohners -- an early 3 voice version of the black dot Double Ray B/C:

Yep- that`s basically a "Pre-Corso" Double-ray deluxe without Deluxe written on it

Hi Adam,

I see what you mean, since it's a 3 voice 2 row Hohner, but I don't usually call the model I illustrated above a Pre-Corso.  That one is uncommon -- it's the size of a pokerwork, and has the same flat metal grille.  Just has 3 reedblocks packed tightly into the Pokerwork-sized case.

I use the name "Pre-Corso" for the much bigger basic body type shown below -- the 3 voice, 21-key, 8-bass 2 row box made on the same basic casework as the "pre-Corona." These have a few variations (keyboard profile, whether there's a cut-out around the bass buttons, type of bass buttons etc.).  In my experience, these always have a 3-dimensional grille, usually celluloid at top and bottom and various kinds of "V" shapes in the middle which is usually exposed metal (but sometimes the whole grille is celluloid-covered).  In the US, this body type is usually found with the rows tuned a fourth apart, but in the U.K. and Ireland you find B/Cs (sometimes with the "Double Ray" stencil label) and C/C#, etc.  In this pic you can see one that was modified sometime before 1953 into an Irish-American accordion!

Wow, Yeah, Sorry - I was guessing it was Corso sized (I tend to think of Corsos and Coronas Midsized as the Ouvertures and Morinos are large, the 2915s small) , I`ve not seen a  3 reedblock 2915 hard to tell the height from the pics .

Hi Adam,

I think those small Hohner 3-voices are rare.  IIRC, Mike R. mentioned and illustrated one on his webpage, which I assumed was factory original although might have been one of his mods.

Out of laziness I used the photo taken by the guy who swapped the box to me & I agree it doesn't show the proportions well.  I intend to put up some better pics of that instrument at some point, but better in its own thread.

Yeah - thanks Paul, it does deserve a new thread, I`ve not even heard of a 3 voice 2915 before . Amazing the wonders which we keep finding from Hohner

Agreed, Adam.  Unfortunately this 3 voice Double-Ray is not a very original example of the model.  It's been played a lot and shows wear from use.  Then, it had bellows replaced (not with an original type unfortunately), and some other work done (by a well-known shop, I'm told) that I wish had been done differently. Great sound though, very comfortable and fast  playability, and IMO great potential to be even more awesome sounding. If we can dig up a more original example among melnet members, that one might be the one to profile in a new thread.

Owen, again sorry for the thread drift!  There was discussion about rare Hohners so I added mine.

No problem! A quick think and a bit of digging will soon unearth which instrument I particularly want to do an inside and out on. I know enough about it to do one, just need the pictures!

Yep! Although it takes less thought for you, given that I think that I've talked at you about it before...
