Hi folks,
I've reached the point in my learning where the big gaps in my knowledge of music theory is becoming a hindrance to my progress, not to mention leaving me baffled when reading some of the post here!
So, can anyone recommend a book on the subject that assumes no prior knowledge (though I have some) ,starts at the basics and progresses on to the more complex stuff please? Bob.

If you want a book (rather than a computer screen) then "ABRSM The AB Guide To Music Theory Part 1" is a reasonable starter. It presents the material in a logical and progressive way. Covers music theory up to grade 5 standard. Part 2 covers the really advanced stuff. Easy to find second hand, I paid a couple of quid for my copy.

The ABRSM book is good. You can get work books as well, with questions and excersises.
http://www.musictheory.net/ is good as well. The excersises are quite addictive.

Considered being more complex in my quip but went for brevity. I suspect Bob knows more about his, but I agree. Sir TB-L actually only invented links .. "But didn't he do WELL"!
As a onetime computing MSc registrant at Newcastle I 've also used JANET, wrote up my Med School project in 'A'-ML and vaguely recall that a major programming language in those legendary days was ... 'B'! :|glug

There is a music theory book in the "For Dummies" series which I found very helpful.
