Title: English Melodeon Players on CD?
Post by: Bananayogi on December 16, 2008, 04:12:11 PM
Hi all -

Does anyone know if the English Melodeon Players LP that was on Plant Life ever got a CD re-release?

I would love to have it on my mp3 player, but cant find a CD version or a digital download on itunes etc.

I guess I could digitise my own LP (into the loft to find the turntable!) - but my copy is fairly worn out!

Thanks!

Hi Bananayogi (or can I call you banana?)
As far as I'm aware there haven't been any plans to release EMPs on CD - I never saw many vinyl copies either. I saw it listed on ebay as a cd once and thought that I'd better buy it. Turned out that the listing was wrong and it was vinyl.
If you do manage to digitise it then I wouldn't mind a copy myself for old times sake.
Cheers

Hi Martin,

Thanks for the reply - I'll drop you a note when I digitise it. Will be a while - I am busy digitising and cleaning up my old Ran Tan Band cassettes  ;) ;D

Cheers - BananaYogi (Jon)

PS The name is a homage to the psychedelic band Gong, and the hurdygurdy player Cliff Stapleton (If you know him, you'll know why!)

Hello there,

I'm completly new to the forum (as a member). I suscribed to answer this question... ;)

I made a digitised copy of "English Melodeon Players" from the original Lp some months ago. The sound is quite good! . Would you like me to send tunes through emails to you both? Format tune is mp4 (I-tunes).
It would be much easier than through the post: I live in Belgium...

Hope this helps!

Robin

Hi Robin
Jon (above) was kind enough to send me a CD of the album a little while ago so I'm ok. But thanks for the kind offer.
Cheers
Martin

It's taken a while for news of this recording to reach my remote corner of the world.
Has the original 'English Melodeon Players' LP been made available for downloading on t'internet somewhere?

thanks, Ian

No -- but I've got it on my hard disk, so if you bring a memory stick next time you're here...

Ian

P.S. Don't believe in giving away music if there's any way to buy the original, but there isn't ;-)

It'll probably be a a year or two before I fly back to England. Can I sort out something with you offline?

The reply was aimed at Guy, who I know well and see quite regularly in London -- sorry, but it wasn't meant as a worldwide offer ;-)

As I recall Roger Watson sang Childrens Crusade on this record. That was by the great, traditional Wallsend songwright Gordon Sumner. So it's not all bad!  ;)

Who is in danger of becoming a folkie, playing regularly with Julian Sutton, Peter Tickell and others.

so whats the trick with playing the harmonys and ornamentation on that tune how is it all done???

I've just listened to that track, and interestingly there is virtually no right-hand harmony; lots of ornamentation, yes, but rarely, if ever, more than one right-hand note at a time.  To my ears, the ornamentation seems to owe a lot to the western USA - I kept imagining a saloon in a cattle town somewhere.........

That takes me back  :o.  He sang that at Jim Mageean's wedding. It was my first experience of French accordion and the possibilities of minor key on the instrument. The tune is with me still, but I internalised it for about 10 years. Then I discovered the Source.

Tony Hall's version of Flowers of Edinburgh still blows me away every time I hear it :-)

If I hadn't seen him play it live several times I'd have put money on it being double tracked...
