Title: Theme for the Month for April 2013: Trip to... Tunes
Post by: Clive Williams on April 01, 2013, 12:06:19 AM
This month's theme, let's do tunes with 'Trip to... ' in the title in some form or other! There's *lots* of these tunes, both well known and a bit more obscure, so something for everyone I would hope.

Can't think of any tunes? Try this link:  (:)

http://trillian.mit.edu/~jc/cgi/abc/tunefind?P=trip+to&find=FIND&m=title&W=wide&scale=0.65&limit=10000&thresh=5&fmt=multiple&V=1&Tsel=tune&Nsel=0

Good luck everyone!

Cheers,

Clive

Thanks for the recommendation, Lester  :|bl
Actually, it is one of my tunes I am most pleased with.  ;)

Here's a recording (http://soundcloud.com/steve_freereeder/trip-to-stowmarket-ponytrot) I made earlier, Trip to Stowmarket paired with Billy Benninton's Pony Trot Polka, and played on my wonderful Wesson Clipper in C (thanks again Rees!)

This is the only "trip to " I know , well kinda!
I love John Gannon's version of this he paired it with Garret Barry's I wish I had his timing. I've also heard it with hag with the money.

Hi Folks - had a little recording session tonight, so here's a two tune set, featuring 'Trip to Cheltenham'; a beautiful jig written by John Shepherd in his Albion Band days.

Out on the Ocean / Trip to Cheltenham - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p2HWKwAviDg

Please forgive the slight indulgence of sticking Out on the Ocean on the front, which is how I normally play these tunes - you can skip straight to the Trip bit at 2:27.

Played on the Castagnari Mory in D/G, with the usual wacky bass setup.

Cheers,

Clive

Here's "Trip to Athlone" on my Hohner B/C:

So difficult not to completely fall apart when making these videos. What's funny is that I don't usually have any stage fright when performing live.

Here are "Trip to The Cottage" and "Trip to Boston," two old tunes from Labrador, and perhaps Ireland or somewhere else before that.

Doubt if I'd have time to work it out and play it for this, but the first tune that sprang to my mind was a folky hit of my youth called "Day Trip to Bangor".  I had the 45.  I remember the B-side was good too - "The Flash Lad".

I've been told once that's because when you're performing live and make a mistake it will be forgotten after a while, but when you record it it will be there FOREVER! ;D

I'm actually pretty poor at both live performance and recording but in a different way. I think I play better live but feel more nervous, but don't feel nervous when I record myself, yet make more mistakes.

Maybe without the recording I just don't notice all the mistakes I make...

I wasn't going to do this theme as I didn't know any "trip to" tunes. But Klaus went through all our ABC files and came up with a tune I really like.
I think it has a slight classical feel to it (Mozart? Did he have a dirty weekend that the historians missed?)
Klaus wrote the harmony for it.

I learnt this tune to play along with my Mum who is learning Concertina. It is in one of her tuition books but I've not been able to find any reference to it otherwise.
Recorded using the built in mic on my Android tablet.
