Title: what now?
Post by: stillborn on June 12, 2013, 08:13:39 PM
Well I have my squeeze box, what now?   Have any of you tried the lessons from Accordions 4 You?

Are they any good for a beginner or is there something better?  I got it yesterday and was clicking around and knew I needed some sort of help.

Thanks,

I'm not familiar with the "accordions 4 you"

What kind of squeeze box do you have and what kind of music are you looking to learn?

....and where are you? There may be somebody on the forum living near you who can give you some face-to-face advice or tuition.

Try a post on the tuition network http://forum.melodeon.net/index.php/topic,4132.0.html

Lots of help available if you live in Britain. See guide in the first post. The more info you can offer the more suitable help you are likely to receive.

I live in Texas.  I bought a hohner panther GCF.  I like all kinds of music.  But I really just want to learn how to play.

I learned twinkle twinkle today and can pretty much play it from memory now.  It takes some uber skills to work the left and right side fluently, it will take some getting uses to.  I will have to scour youtube tomorro for some more easy songs.

I suspect you already have those easy tunes in your head, actually that's good learning. Get (both) hands to learn to express music you already know. A few of those and you'll have feel for how the melodeon works and can set about something you fancy "off the Net"

Nothing wrong with nursery tunes, they are simple and all know them. Waited over an hour in a Whitby session for my turn, launched into something, 3 year old Dolly May "no, NO, Daddy! Baa Baa Black Sheep" :o which was exactly what the room then all sang.

Hello Still--

You are in the land of GCF with a GCF box, so you should have no problem getting started.

Suggestion:  look at reyesforum.com which is an almost all 3 box site, lots of resources there.

There are not a lot of decent GCF "method" books, but the site will almost for sure show you the basics of how the layout works.

Plus, there are likely quite a few reyes members near you, no matter where you are in Tejas, so you may be able to get some personal recommendations.

If you are near San Antonio, for example, you will likely have people over to your house next week if you want it!  I used to work 2 weeks a month in SA and guys would come over to the Homewood where I stayed near I-10 and play; free beer and snacks M-F every week.  I learned a lot.

Only one warning:  since lots of Tejas GCF players play in bands, some don't learn the bass side.  :P

Note:  meant "3-row" box site.

Might also look at Kay's site:

I don't know her, but my impression is that she knows everybody in TX.

There is a Dallas Accordion Society: http://accordions.com/naa/associations/tx/dallas.html (http://accordions.com/naa/associations/tx/dallas.html) I have never been here but from the web page they meet as follows:

First Tuesday of the Month
I-HOP Restaurant,
Loop 635 (LBJ Fwy) at Centerville
Garland, Texas

7:00PM - 7:30PM   Open Mic
7:30PM - 8:00PM   Program: Featured Accordionist
8:00PM - 9:00PM   Open Mic
Restaurant Menu items available
(add 15% tip for wait staff and room usage)

The main page is at: http://www.nationalaccordion.org/ (http://www.nationalaccordion.org/) and the Texas groups at: http://accordions.com/naa/associations/tx.html (http://accordions.com/naa/associations/tx.html)

I live in Katy (to the west of Houston). There is the Houston Accordion Association I go to and diatonic boxes are welcome there. It is a very encouraging group: I go and play my English tunes and listen to Norteno/Conjunto, French, German, Cajun and many other styles. I get to play 5 songs, sometimes badly, sometimes good but the applause and encouragement is always the same. As we play in restaurants it is great to boost your confidence to play in a public space.  http://accordions.com/naa/associations/tx/houston.html
