That's pretty cool, kind of early precursor of the Ztar.

Genuinely what is this piece of kit? Some sort of Gurdy or something?
-
Gurdy? No! It's a melophone.
(Honestly, reminds me of someone coming up after a gurdy recital and remarking, "I didn't know it had reeds...") ;)

So is this an actual, rare, bona fide "collectors piece" - unlike, for instance, the "rare" old Hohners so often listed on EBay?!
The Met has a pretty interesting collection of early free-reed instruments on display, all of which are quite odd-looking.

Yes, only ever seen one before and that was in a museum.

I've never seen one, other than at the musical instrument gallery at the Horniman Museum in London. Here's a bit more info - http://squeezyboy.blogs.com/squeezytunes/2008/02/melophone.html
