Here we go folks, this month's winner, from Estonia, Kristjani Reilender. I think we're all going to have to learn this one from scratch, so let's all have a go!
Here's a few different versions from youtube:

It sounds like something they would teach at the Vara tune workshops in Sweden. Anyone knows where it's from?
-
What kind of box is the young lady in the first video playing?
-
That would be Tallinn....

Was waiting for you Mr Anahata... v good, thx.

Very good indeed Anahata! I don't know - you wait ages for a bus, then 2 come along at once, isn't that always the way? Here's a version I recorded tonight on the preciosa in Bb/Eb:

I'm much more convinced by the tune now I've learned it - worth the effort I think. Those run downs are tricky, no doubt about it - get Owen's transcription on an ABC player and slow it right down. Practice it a few times, and then give up and just play it as you feel it and don't worry too much about them, that's my advice. With (slight) apologies for the stampy feet - somehow the tune felt like it needed it, and I certainly needed it to keep anything like a steady beat.
Come all you who voted for it, and indeed those that didn't, time to have a go!

Interesting that the two YouTube versions that Clive suggested are both in G, yet Owens abc posted is in D and that's what seems to be being played on Melnet. G seems nice and bright to me, though I do bring in my lower register and the triplets are more difficult. Thoughts?
-
The original that Owen and I learnt it from (by Juhan Uppin, who I have a feeling wrote the tune) is in C - https://soundcloud.com/olliekingbox/kristjani-reilender I'll take it down soon, as I don't have the copyright, but I think this recording really swings.
-
I will record this later. It is a stonking tune and I've been playing it A LOT. I will also check the liner notes and see who did write it. It works very well in D on the box and benefits from the lower reeds, as otherwise it goes quite squeaky.

Wow - what a sound for a box! I love it!
I presume it's a lootspill or however you spell it!

Sounds fantastic, doesn't it?! Yup, it's a Lõõtspill (a word I love, simply for the fact that it has eyebrows).

Wow indeed - I want one! (a Lõõtspill, that is)
And I might review my own version of the tune after listening to that. There are some nice RH harmonies going on there.
I did mine in D because Owen posted an ABC of it in that key. It never occurred to me to check what key the original was in.
It works nicely on a 1-row, by the way.

Just watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UHuD-ck425Q
The lootspill is an amazing instrument. I've been wanting to do an inside and out on it for ages, the construction and tuning are both very unusual. But I have yet to find a player willing to take one to pieces.

The bass sounds like a church organ. The reeds must be the size of small dancing swords...

It's great for singing to too, and he's a pretty good singer! (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=viTuiPR0NnA)

This is a great lõõtspill recording as well.

It would be nice to measure the tuning and temperament as well, great sound. (:)

From Anahata, today, ''Works nicely on a 1 row...'' I think I'm roughly getting there on my new Albrecht in D, but 'nicely'? Not really. It's the triplets that are causing me pain...and just out of curiosity, what exactly does Kristjani Reilender mean ? :||: :||: :||: ???
-
forrest, I believe I am correct in saying that each row is tuned to just and that the voicing is different for each row.

Not sure about Kristjani, but a reilender is a type of dance.

That's not only an incredible sound, but it's also a stonking tune. I *need* to learn it.

Keep slipping into ''Young Collins''..must be getting tired.. :||: :||: :Ph

Fantastic stuff! The second rendition just shows how it makes an awesome step-hop tune.

Well I've recorded a version which is fairly straightforwardly lifted straight from Juhan's playing. Except that all his twiddles and harmony are a little more difficult with only two rows, other than four! Recorded in one take in my lunch break.
I've looked up the liner notes and it is by one Kristjan Priks. I also typed in the description into google translate and this is what came out:
"Become surprisingly popular, and quickly spread to the author's creations, which can be regarded as ignorance can easily create a tradition. Although originally patterned guitar, accordion, or for improved fit it. The story tells of a narrow spiral stairs moving - slowly and determinedly upwards to stumble ... ludinal down again and collapsed."
So now we know.
Here is my version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kZv_CpaRMzc&feature=youtube_gdata
Plus a blog post explaining why I am in a field: http://ukebert.wordpress.com/2013/10/14/kristjani-reilender/

Ukebert - at the risk of sounding like a fanboy ... that is fantastic playing! Again.

Where the hell is the 'Like' button when you need it? Here we have a well respected and very popular pro player of great stature tipping his cap to an amateur player of extraordinary ability.
Remember you saw this first on melnet, squeezy's natural home!

Ha! You are as always, far too kind. In all honesty there wasn't much creative input into that arrangement, I just copied exactly what Juhan did!
Incidentally, I have most of his CDs, which I got from him directly. They are fantastic and well recommended.
-
Owen, I notice on your youtube you call it bot Reinlander and Reinlender, and on this topic it is called Reilender. Are some of these variations between languages, or are there mistakes lurking there as well?
-
I think that is merely a typo :|bl
-
I think that is merely a typo :|bl
But which version is correct? :o
-
I think Reinlender, because I've used that more. But I don't have the liner notes in front of me ;)
-
Plus a blog post explaining why I am in a field ...
I thought it was obvious that you are outstanding in your field ...
Yes I did! Hah! 8)
And fantastic playing, and if you're looking for blog topics, I'd love to hear about your progress with the descants ... I've been wrestling hard with the "double-stops" and would love to hear about your -- obviously much more fruitful -- journey with them.
-
This tune wasn't about descants as such - the top line is usually the melody. Basically though it's just a matter of learning right hand chords. After that everything is straightforward.
However, I recently led a workshop on right hand harmony and had so much fun that I am very keen to do it again. So I might not give away my secrets on melnet ;)
(The biggest secret is that it is nowhere near as hard as it looks)
-
But which version is correct? :o
Rejländer gets lots of Google hits, though that's arguably a Swedish spelling, might be different in Estonia.
-

See: http://www.easylivingmusic.ee/category/rahvamuusika/# and scroll down a bit - you get to Juhan's listed recordings which gives the right spelling.

With an e then! The thread title is right (:)

I've had so much fun with this one! It's a fantastic tune.
Here's my attempt - as always complete with fluffs that come absolutely free of charge! Again on the Hohner Lucia which I'm afraid I'm a bit obsessed with at the moment.
http://youtu.be/18BOajlCT0I
To appease those who don't like decapitated videos - this video is complete with gurning and the excessive light from my window!

The obsession is evidently paying off! Nice combination of both squeezy and JK - album please.

here's my attempt, must admit the triplets aren't really there yet and i seem to have developed wheezy bass hand

End of the month folks, so a new tune - but as ever, please glue any late entries onto the end of this thread!
