Title: Purple stars and greybeard
Post by: Mike Higgins on April 15, 2009, 07:03:22 PM
I notice that people have stars of different colours and quantities, and have interesting titles to boot. I am, apparently, a good talker and others have even grander titles than that! So, how does one get a blackbelt in melodeon.net posting?

Post a lot!  ::)

Useful content not a necessity - empty vessels, loudest noises etc (posted as current #4 poster)

Not sure why Tallship has 4 stars and I have only 3 yet I have posted more, maybe its a quality thing?

Having a grey beard doesn't actually help

Nor does not having one!

Ah, but your stars are blue, tilted at a jaunty angle and have 'go faster' stripes. perhaps it's your status as 'Mods and Volunteers'? As for the quality thing you are quite right. After all, apart from a pinned thread by the administrator I do have the most frequently read thread on the board ... (where's that emote with a sticking out tongue when you need it?)  >:E

Haven't you got to get shot in battle to get a purple star?

Nope, you'll just get a letter from Vision Express inviting you in for an eye test. Believe me, the stars are blue!  >:E

BUT...........there's another board that I read and they sent me a happy birthday e mail on my birthday.

Didn't get that from melodeon.net though did I .............and I bet there's no shortage of people who can play Happy Birthday.

Actually, I've just had a thought....get somebody to take a video of myself playing happy birthday, post it on Youtube and I never ever have to buy another birthday card.

If you become a forum superhero, I wonder what melodeon 'special skills' you inherit?

Hopefully the ones that will enable you to play those pesky mandolin trills that Al is asking for (in another thread, that is)!
Just nipping back over to see if there have been any answers on that one yet.

nope!

BTW I see that I'm now a 'respected greybeard' and I ask myself 'how can this be' (this is a rhetorical question and does not actually require an answer) since I've really not been playing the Melodeon for very long. Yes, Lester's remark about empty vessels is ringing long and true in my case. However, since the stars & status system refers simply to one's input into this forum - and I'm naturally a very garrulous bloke - it is of course no real surprise to me.

I think that all you folk who actually run this site (whether admin, volunteer or moderate etc) are the real heroes - and therefore should all be given special status - what about a 'Halo' for Theo???

AL ;D

Perhaps i should change the wording of all the star rating comments to reflect degrees of talkativeness, ranging from "Quiet but thoughtful"  to "suffers from verbal diarrhoea"  ;D ;D

Now then Theo - I do feel that star rating comments of that ilk have the potential to be quite hurtful - I have never EVER been accused of being quiet or thoughtful in my entire life! As to verbal diarrhoea - well I hate to be pedantic (but I will be just for now) since this medium is written and not spoken (we don't talk or listen on this forum, we read and write) I suppose it should be called Literary Diarrhoea. It was a disease that A. Trollope was accused of - but as he got paid for his novels by the word he had good reason to go for 'Hero' status in his chosen medium.

Perhaps I could suggest that more musical star ratings be used., i.e:

pianissimo= low poster - shy quiet retiring type

through to

Fortissimo= Loud Mouth

Could even include people who have'nt posted much lately as 'Rall...' etc?
This could be worked on i'm sure within this community.
Blessings, AL ;D

Or Pause, perhaps.

In fact if the total amount of posts is equivalent to volume, the posts per day could be attributed to cresc/dim and (by non-existent logic) the rate of change of posts per day to rall/accel.

As an impending victim of the GFC maybe I too will now have the time to climb up the ladder to the Stars.

Yes even the church is not exempt from our current fiscal woes.

Looking on the bright side more posts more stars, more time for practice.

Is the glass half full or half empty?

Anyway that not til October make hay while the sun shines I say.

Better idea -

Post count - Forte/piano
Post per day - Cresc/Dim
Amount of time spent online - Allegro/lento
Amount of time per day - Accel/Rall
Banned - Pause

Obviously it wouldn't just be forte or piano but everything in between and beyond.

When I looked at the members list and their number of posts I was next to Theo... with 439! That makes a very long beard!

That would be the rate of change of time online per day... (legato, staccato, pizzicato etc.)

They can't be that, because even I've got three and, as a mere male, I'm only entitled to suffer from PMS!  >:E

You're right, it's nothing to do with PMS (or even PMT), because I've just sent another PM but I still have only 2 stars!
