I have recently discovered the You Tube channel of a lovely player, Massimo Craveri but there is something which puzzles me about some of his videos. He plays a Castagnari Niko and on some of the recordings, he has taped a covering over the treble side grill of his instrument. Rather crudely done, with a few bits of masking tape, I think, it is obviously not meant to be permanent.
Why would he do this? Does it change the sound in any way or is it acting like some kind of mute?
Have a look, despite the graphic effects on the video, the cover is quite obvious:

Put simply - yes.
The most noticeable effect of any covering over the treble grille is to mute it, but it is quite probable it will take more of the high frequencies, altering the tone. The recording has a lovely mellow tone (of course to a D/G player any G/C box sounds mellow) yet the bass doesn't sound overpowering - the problem with muting the treble end! Mind you, the mics may have been positioned purely for the treble.
Great tune to learn for a quiet evening.
Rob.

Here's the official Castagnari gadget: http://www.castagnari.com//index.php?strparam=&language=uk&sz=301&id=59 (http://www.castagnari.com//index.php?strparam=&language=uk&sz=301&id=59)

I've been wondering what that actually was for a while. I thought they were just flogging some special muslin for some reason ???

I thought thats what he was doing. Sometimes I feel like the treble side is just too over powering on my hohner. I need to try that out. Doesn't seem too hard to whip up something.

Thanks Rob, that's really interesting. I suppose, one could also mute the bass side in the same way. Sometimes I would like to on my Hascy - I think I will give it a try.

Has anyone messed about with this type of modification? Different materials/weights/thread counts for instance?
