Well, we've done tunes with names in them; this month we'll tunes with no names at all! Any of the following cases:
- Tunes that genuinely have no known name (e.g. the countless unnamed 'Andro', 'Scottish air' or similarly vaguely named tunes)
- Tunes that you don't happen to know the name of, but would like to (let's see if the melodeon.net's collective knowledge can tell you!)
- 'Name that tune' melodeon.net style - obscure tunes that you know the name of, but want to see if anyone else can place it
- Tunes that you've written, but not named yet, for which you'd like some name suggestions!
Happy playing!

This could be very interesting! I presume 'by ear' players could substitute tunes '' thought up'' for tunes ''written''

Two Tunes known by me as the Kingfisher Set
Kingfisher 1 (http://lesters-tune-a-day.blogspot.co.uk/2012/12/tune-101-kingfisher-1.html)
Kingfisher 2 (http://lesters-tune-a-day.blogspot.co.uk/2012/12/tune-102-kingfisher-2.html)
A pair of tunes known in my circle of players as the Kingfisher Set. It was thought that this tune was the Kingfisher and the one that went with it was known as "The Tune That Goes With The Kingfisher". Then someone said the second tune was the Kingfisher and the first tune was actually "The Tune That Goes With The Kingfisher". Now turns out that neither are the Kingfisher but the name has stuck. :P

One of my favourite tunes, but does anyone know what it's called ?
It was played every week in Llantrisant Folk Club, I used to visit when I was working in Cardiff.

Here's two untitled hornpipes collected by Cecil Sharp from James Higgins, a fiddler at Shepton Mallet workhouse.

That's a fabulously haunting tune Martin - I do hope someone knows it as I now very much want the ABC !!

Very nice sound indeed! Let it be nameless no longer.

This is a bit of an odd one; I haven't a clue whether it's a tune I've heard and subliminally learned, or a ragbag of snippets of other tunes stitched together, or an original composition. I just found myself playing it one day and it's sort of insinuated itself into my repertoire. Either way up, I don't have a name for it!
Sorry the recording's a bit rough and ready; it's just a single mic straight into the laptop. There are a few fluffs as well - one day I might do a "proper" recording of it.

Well I haven't a clue what it might be either but I absolutely love it! Bloomin' well played too.
I thought I saw Benny Hill chasing a couple of scantily clad girls off into the distance, just for a second!
Really lovely, well played, thanks.

Here's a rather lovely little tune learned from the playing of Sam Sweeney and Rob Harbron (off youtube!). No idea what it's called, or where it comes from. Anyone know? Yes, I *could* ask them of course, but that's not the point of this month is it? :-)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-MKGvqpqvk
Played on a Hohner Preciosa in Bb/Eb; it's not a difficult tune in itself, but it takes some learning to find out where all the bits of the tune go, and what follows on from them. I'm sure I haven't got them all right here, but let's face it, re-recording wasn't going to make it any better!
Cheers,
Clive

Here are two tunes which I think I learnt (mislearnt/misrememberd?!) from a recording I made of Home Service playing on the radio, probably in the early 1980's. The cassette tape's been gone for many a year. I'd be very happy if someone can tell me what they're called and whether I'm playing them anything near like they're supposed to be or anything else about 'em.

Wiltshire Six Hand Reel and Bobby Shaftoe.
The Wiltshire Six Hand Reel is in John Kirkpatrick's "English Choice" book (pub. Mally)
Bobby Shaftoe I learned from Mel Dean in the 1970s.
Can't tell you much more about either of them. Maybe look them up in The Fiddler's Companion?

Thank you for the info, Anahata. I've actually got JK's book but never checked out the tune. I've just caught up with your two tunes - I try not to listen to TOTM if I'm posting until after I've done. Lovely playing of two excellent tunes!

I've recently become a bit obsessed with a beautiful Polska that Andy Cutting plays in this video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSOl7lUysAw. He says what it's called at the start but I can't work out the name and don't know anything else about it. (If anyone can either work out what he's saying, or knows what it's called, I'd love to know.)
Here's my attempt: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akGXqlopJkg&feature=youtu.be

Wonderful stuff!
Incidentally, Rob has just updated his website, and the dots for this tune can be found there. http://robertharbron.com/?p=78

Thanks Ollie - it turns out that the tune is called 'Down to the Beach'. I really like some of the tunes Rob writes, and that one is an absolute corker. My version pales into complete inadequacy compared to the original video I copied it from, which you can see on Rob's music page on his website; Sam/Rob play it so eloquently that I can but gibber.

Now this one is very untitled, as it's over 800 years old. I've uploaded a version before which I performed live with my friend Steve on a gurdy. It's a bit awkward on the D row with some annoying reversals, but here's a vaguely clean recording at least!

Argh, I've heard that tune somewhere before too and can't remember its name. Nice playing too!

Excellent stuff butimba! Really liked the little descant that you put in. (:)
That's a tune called Ã…repolska, as played here by Hoven Droven - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NVbPRP6fzFY Traditional Swedish are far as I know.

Thanks for both your kind comment (that's the pianist in me coming out (:)) and for naming the tune. Hooray! It's interesting to hear a fiddle version of it.

I like the simplicity of your playing on this tune, and all the space between the phrases at the start - it really suits it.

As you can see from the picture this tune is actually headed [No Title] so it seemed a good one to try and learn for this.
It turns out that it's a lovely little tune, I've tried adding a RH harmony second time round which I mostly got right on the recording!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nvdG6OQAEQU
(Disclaimer: I've only been playing the Melodeon since October so the performance is not as smooth as most people's here - it was the best I could do ;) )

That's brilliant progress for just a couple or 3 months' playing and good on you for contributing your playing to the thread. :||: (:)

Really enjoyed Le Grand Bal du Bath in November last year - particularly Dave Shepherd & Anna Pack. This is my attempt at one of the tunes they played. Would like to know what it's called and whether it is traditional or contemporary.

Yes, that's really nice! It's an Avant Deux from Poitou in France, traditional I believe. Benoit Guerbigny did a fantastic album 'Les Pieds sur la Braise' a few years back, which was for me my first introduction to Poitou music, including this tune (and lots of other great stuff). You can see a video of Dave Shepherd playing it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nlWs1wrld78

Ah thanks Clive. I'm always more comfortable knowing the name of a tune. In fact, even if someone is playing a tune I know, often I can't join in until I know what it's called. Something weird about the way the human brain works. And mine!

Yep, me too. Exactly the same!

This CD arrived this morning from those nice people at Auvergne Diffusion. Some great tunes! Thanks for the recommendation, Clive.
PS In the same packet was the first 21 Boutons CD ... Something else to enjoy.
