Title: Rural Life
Post by: HallelujahAl on May 04, 2009, 09:49:22 PM
Hi - does anyone know where I may be able to get hold of the dots for 'Rural Life'. Heard it played as a celebration waltz on the radio the other and am now gripped by it. Had a look around and even tried a 'Lester' type search but to no avail. But since I'm basically a computer-illiterate perhaps I'm not looking properly?
Thanks for all help. AL ???

Always hard to search for something that brings up a great deal of "dazzle" because it has other meanings!

Can you think of an unusual associated word to help narrow the search Al?

Mackenzie Davidson was the name. Hope this helps - though it hasn't helped me yet. It was played on the BBC Scotland 'Take the floor' Programme last weekend.

Hi Al,
Hopefully by the time you read this Graeme Mackay will have passed the music on to you.We broadcast this lovely waltz on 'Take the Floor' about 4 years ago and it was repeated a couple of weeks ago. We also recorded it on a CD 'About Tyme' prior to that. On both the broadcast and the CD I used my late father's 1930s Double Ray deluxe melodeon for this tune. The tune 'Rural Life' was written by  A. McKenzie Davidson and dedicated to the 'Scottish Women's Rural Institute'

Cheers,

Ian.

Thanks Ian - yes Graeme has passed it on to me - thanks so much for it. Such a beautiful tune - I must have heard it on the TTF program. I loved the 'Posties Jig' that you did (all Jimmy Shand tunes) - marvellous. Have recently taken up BCC# and am going to Graeme's Button Box Workshop weekend in Aviemore in SEptember - I am committed to learning it by then!

Is the CD still available - if so where from?
Thanks
AL

Hi Al,
Yes the CD is still available, Highlander Music at Muir of Ord still stock them. I think most of the Jimmy Shand jigs are on it as well but in different sets. Anyway, thanks for your interest.

Cheers,

Ian.

Sorry to disagree with you Graeme but the 16 bars of the 3rd part are followed by 16 bars of a totally different measure albeit in the same key so Strad was right in saying that the tune was played AABBACDA.

Thank you Graeme for making the notation available and taking the time to record and post yourself playing it. To see a bare tune expanded for a BCA with treble chords and interesting basses is great, there's not a lot of help like that readily available. Your workshop will be a cracker.

I am only passing on the help that I have recieved from others such as Ian Cruickshanks.  If it wasn't for him I wouldn't be able to provide this notes and recording.  And Al of course for bringing the tune to my attention.  I now include it as part of my program everynight.

If we can't help each other there's no hope for anyone!  With the access we now have to websites like this one and youtube, there's no reason why we shouldn't share our abilities etc.

I'm glad you like what I do and I, along with many others on this site, are always here to help.

I include it everyday as part of my practice routine - so it sure is getting a good outing! Mind you I don't play it anything like Graeme or Ian  ::)
Thanks to you both.

Hi Graeme - a video response (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2H-7ynmnOzE) just for a laugh - and a question: why does my playing go completely to pot in front of a camera?

Blessings, AL

Ah yer doing a grand job!  One tip, use your pinky!  It's a valuable finger for the higher notes.

As far as the camera thing goes, pass.  I'm sure the camera swaps notes round once I've played them
