Still waiting to here officially from Andy for the ok to play his wonderful tune, but here it is, a worthy winner and one that's quite likely to appear in any session in the UK.
Here it is played by Andy himself https://youtu.be/UEYR5F_j7sU?t=3m29s (2nd tune in set) and here, somewhat slower and more close up - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLWhMcmQdFY - you can see it's a cross row tune really; in fact it sits beautifully cross the rows. Much easier in fact, I would suggest that playing it up and down the row.
Happy playing folks; looking forward to hearing your versions!

Outwith my comfort zone and at the edges of competence, this is as far as puffing Billy gets, (even in a flatworld), before retiring to a darkened shed in a quiet siding. (Working from the chords to the melody fingering cleared a block for me, so may be worth using notation with chords. There is an occasional minor substitution in the playing, which I attribute to the folk process!)

I think I'm right in believing that Andy has used the 'Fantasy sound' setting on his Mory to good effect on the Youtube recording of Flatworld. ::)
As ever, playing to aspire to, and regrettably in my case never come near to achieving. :'(
Back to the 'music room' for another 10000 hours of practice before I post my version I think !

Nice Bill. Not one I'll ever aspire to but if I ever did I'd try and do it like your version..

I enjoyed that James - thank you. Some great harmonies.

Really enjoyed this. Can I ask what you played it on and whether a 3 row means not having to change direction mid chord in the B section?

I did play it on the 3 row and used the third row for D and C reversals as well as the G# at the end of the first time through. When paying it on a 2 row, I'd just miss out the chords for those notes!
-
It's more that I'm pants at changing direction for single notes rather than worrying about the break in the chord - possibly that I have an affinity for tunes mainly in one direction at a time, so never practise the push pull technique, also perhaps the longer (I think they are) bellows on my Serafini may make it a bit less quick to turn. I assume it was on your Mengascini?

Hi All
If I am to have any chance of getting this tune I think I will need the dots - and also - if possible the chords !
Many thanks

Let me know if you want it for a different box, or are struggling with the chords. I can knock something up for you.

Hi,
I have a tab for this tune in Am for a G/C box but it works just the same in Em for a D/G. I have been trying to attach it without success :(...any suggestions?
-
Hi, my effort on a standard 2 row G/C Parigi.(Plus another tune)
https://soundcloud.com/tuftyabc/totm-flatworldmp3
-
Ha,
You don't need the tab ;)
Bravo !
Roland
-
Whats a tab? ;D I began learning this by ear some time ago, based on a utube clip by a chap called Hector, who I think comes from Australia. As always things change in the playing. The same fingering works on a three voice D/G but sounds best on the G/C.
-
A tablature is the music written for melodeon which shows you a way to play the tune. Which buttons, which direction etc. (:). If you would like to see it(as I can't seem to figure out how to post it here) send me an e-mail:- roland.carson@btconnect.com and I would be happy to send it to you :D I think this tune was composed in Am so it works well on G/C
-
Just a reminder for folks with short memories ;).
There was a good thread about this tune; how to play it, which keys to play it in, etc., back in 2011.
Here's the link to the first post in the thread. It's worth following through all the contributions.
http://forum.melodeon.net/index.php/topic,6810.msg84695.html#msg84695
Andy Cutting himself joined in the discussion (http://forum.melodeon.net/index.php/topic,6810.msg97289.html#msg97289).

Just looked at that thread, and found lots of useful tips.
One thing I notice about this tune and Horizonto are the implied cycle of fifths in the B section (where the chords descend by a 5th). I've always been a sucker for this ubiquitous technique, and it's never worn thin.
So I would suggest that instead of Mr Ryall's (B section)
|:Em | C | D | G | Em | C | D | B |
| Em | C | D | G | Em | C | B | Em :|
I'd replace the C with an Am, the Em with a C, and the C with an Am (as a better substitute for some sort of F# half dim)
|:Em | Am | D | G | C | Am | D | B |
Then the D chord is merely an interruption of the complete (implied) diatonic cycle.
Just to check - as I'm thinking in G/C terms and can't myself see the wood for the trees now with all the bold brackets in front of me.
B section chords in Am
Am - Dm - G - C - F - Dm - G - E (or Em)
Dm is a good aural substitute for B dim in this context, and the G is a nice delay for the real next chord, and the G chord gets omitted in the repeat as we go straight to E (then Am) for the full package of 5ths:
Am - Dm - G - C - F - Dm - E - Am
with only the 2nd Dm to tempt us to hear something more complex.

This is very close to Alexandra Browne's* transcription of what Andy Cutting played when she was compiling her extraordinary tunebook 'Diatonic Liaisons' **. I hope she won't mind me attaching a jpg version of Flatworld from the book, given that she has previously included it in the linked thread. From this you can see that the B-music chord sequence as given in Diatonic Liaisons is:
|: Am - F - G - C - F - Dm - |1st Bm - Em :|2nd Em - Am ||

It really is full of little difficulties, this tune! Nice though. I have to make the basses more interesting and try to introduce some harmonies and variations in the treble line = but really, that will probably take me years!!!
Here is my attempt, very basic, as written: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=coYHF-vvuE8

Clive, that's lovely-I knew you'd make much better use of the VdA than I ever could!

Thanks Guy - it's taken me a little while to get my head around the bass system; think I've got there now though :-)
-
Sounds great. Playing and instrument. I'd like to hear it live or better still, get it in my hands for a moment.

Some interesting versions of Flatworld out there. I came across this one:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xoDCzKmYQ44
Flatworld/In Continental Mood were a couple of tunes that I struggled with for a few weeks about a year ago , got them to about 90% ... & then stopped playing them. I feel like Im starting all over again. :( Seems like I have to get tricky tunes like these to 100% & then play for a few months more before they really sink in.

Here's my version of Flat World: https://youtu.be/inkhnGIFpCk
A great tune that first inspired me to start playing the melodeon. I have been trying to play it in the upper octave for the last 10 days as I think it would be nice to switch between the two, but alas my fingers are not in agreement...so lower octave it is for now. If I do crack the upper octave by the end of December I'll perhaps post another version.

Bonjour Catherine! Lovely, well played 🙂

I didn't think I could add anything to the melodeon world with a straight forward performance of Flatworld, so I wrote my kids a countermelody, which they suffered me to record, once on a camcorder, so excuse the roughness.

That's the best thing I have heard all day!!!
It took me back to when I was a child - everyone in the family played a musical instrument and there was no TV. Wonderful times!
Thank you for that! :-)
-
Thanks for understanding.
I feel it's like the modern day version of 'what did you do in the war, Daddy'. I may be a ratty stressed out teacher / dad (they're both at my school). But I did write tunes for them, little duets getting a bit harder every year. It's some sort of legacy in the absence of anything better. By the way, I give my son tips in some GCSE subjects, but maths and science I have to get his advice on. Happy balance. Wish I had the time to enjoy it.

bravo ... the Bach family at work ;)

I'm really enjoying this thread and all your versions of 'Flatworld' - although there not as many as I would have expected.
This tune remains outside my comfort zone but every day I am getting nearer to it. I still hope to have something recorded by the end of the month but either way, this is a useful learning experience for me.

I think this is great Andy! I really like your playing here and your slight 'twist' on the rhythm. Also your bass line is intuitive. Your box sounds great !

Yes - what Roland said. Great stuff, well played! Probably not quite as Andy Cutting originally envisaged but hopefully he would approve. ;)

Hello friends,
Here is my contribution for December: https://youtu.be/9wnaqWSF6wQ
I wish I could improve on the bass or something, but the music was already hard enough and I just tried to play it with the less flaws possible.
Please notice the nice Christmas tree by my side :) I wish you all a warm Christmas!
-
That's really nice Pequod. One of the hardest things with this tune, is to make it flow smoothly and you have achieved that. lovely!
-
Here is my abbreviated version, played on a one row four stopper in C with two stops muted.

Just about defeated by this tune but determined to record something. Unfortunately every time the camera goes on I fall off the tune and this happens (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9w9CwAckAG0). I'm thinking of calling it 'Flatarse'.
As an alternative to sneaking up on myself and recording me when I wasn't looking I tried an audio only recording this morning and uploaded to Soundcloud (https://soundcloud.com/h3l3nac/flatworld), it's still a bit wobbly and I know I can play the tune better than this but hey, normal life (and practising other tunes) needs to resume at some point, right?
Relieved of Mole Valley.

Love your honesty Helena, Flatarse is really brilliant. ;D ;D

Shren has been playing for a two-and-a-bit-years (ever since I thrust a melodeon at her on our very first meeting) and I think this is fabulous :)
The unicorn thinks so too.

Three times through, never lost the momentum and not an F-bomb in sight - well done!

This box has the low C - it used to be mine and I had it tweaked to G scale, although being 23 button it has room for accidentals, low notes and dog-summoning notes too.

Oh! there should be an apostrophe 'each month's tune'. :P

Thank you folks - nicely done this month! Onto the next one, and as always, please feel free to keep posting any late entries to this thread!

Here's a late entry!
https://youtu.be/5Xaf-4cLhRE
I post this, it's clearly a practice vid, and mid-pandemic, but I was having a good time as were my dogs, and I think you might enjoy the nonsense.
I have a bunch of similar vids (minus canine help) from back when I tried to learn this for ToTM - so you have my sympathy.
Your playing is great once you get past the initial stumbles so although it's clearly a work in progress, it's also clear that you are making excellent progress. I look forward to seeing the finished version. You never know I might get around to re-recording it myself one of these days.

I hope so! Thank you for the encouraging words, I do love this tune!

part B, which has some interesting geometry in the fingering
You're not kidding! I gave up on that tune. Full marks for taking it on, it's sounding promising, and thank you for smiling at me all the way through!
Looking forward to hearing the two part version...

Melodeon + good tune + wagging beasts + wine = smiles. ;)
