Post by: Richard Shaul on December 29, 2015, 09:10:05 PM
Hello, does anybody have any experience of the Sherwood range? Not much on the 'net apart from th blurb from people that sell them.

I played one at Whitby on the hobgoblin stall. They are good for the money and Aren't to bad to play either. They are quite responsive, I'd equate them to something between the early, less refined, Sandpiper and a chinese hohner pokerwork. I suspect they'll get better as time goes on.

I only tried the 2.5 row melodeon though so the 2 row may be different as there's a price difference and therefore maybe a quality difference.

They don't compare in any way to something from a reputable continental maker such as Saltarelle or Castagnari but that isn't the market that it's aimed at.

Try and get an old german Hohner if you are looking for a 2 row around this price range

Try one at somewhere like Hobgoblin and see what you think

Sherwood is, I believe,  Hobgoblins brand name for bought in instruments from various sources. As a result different models may come from different makers or even different countries so quality may be different from  model to model.  They probably supply them to the trade through their wholesale operation Gremlin Instruments.   Similar idea to the Music Room and the Sandpiper, though the Music Room don't seem to supply them to the trade.

All gone quiet on this brand, shame as they are a good well made mid-price box.
I got hold of the 2.5 row Stowe a few months back and while still playing it in so to speak
have not found anything of major concern.
There is a lot to be said for mid-price boxes, my main stalwart is a Morgane which I love to bits.

I played a friend's 2 row earlier this year. It looked great, it felt great, and had a nice action.
But it was let down completely by the sound which was quiet and uninspiring, incapable of making itself heard - not what you expect from a melodeon!!

I sure much of that could have been down to poor reed set up as they are meant to use Italian reeds (bottom of the range,  I suspect).

Set up well, they might be OK, but I'd definitely play the box (or get someone to play it for you) before considering buying.

A fettled secondhand Hohner Erica or Pokerwork is definitely better value and they are regularly advertised on Melnet.

PS That Sherwood went back to the shop and he now has a Pokerwork.
