Yes, I know that should really have an acute on the e, but british keyboards, eh? This month's poll winner is the Gaspe Reel - a traditional tune from Quebec.
Two demo videos here - the Gaspe Reel here played by Gavin Atkin https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Od8fHhyiag and here at Quebecois speed by Serge Carrier https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c_3_YeG9eL4 which also includes a 3rd part to the tune.
Plays on a one row of course, as wonderfully shown by Serge!
Enjoy,
Clive

Ah- is that what that tune's called? I've heard it played from time to time but never knew its name or got sufficiently familiar with it to learn it. Now seems a good opportunity!

First heard this years ago on Tufty Swift LP. Reminded of it last month when it came second in poll. Played on 1 row 4 stop "D" made on "Irish Dancemaster" label in Florida I think! Version still developing.

Great sound! (:) Reading your post made me think back to bumping into you at Beck Hole. Will prob be there again on Sat afternoon 12th March as the band are up at Lockton again for the weekend. If you're in the area we're doing a ceilidh in the evening at Lockton village hall.

I know a version of this tune that's called Beaumont Rag. Does that ring a bell with anyone?

You're right, I'm wrong about that. I've known a version of The Gaspe Reel for years, but I may never have actually know the name of the tune.

I always seem to have the urge to do a recording when I don't have any time ::)
Anyway, recorded this morning.
Gaspé Reel, one row 4 stop in C (http://www.andrew-wigglesworth.co.uk/files/melnet/2016/gaspe_reel-02-03-16-one-row-4-stop-in-c.ogg).

Can't find the Bill Spence version. There used to be a show in the 70's called "Crockett's Victory Garden" and Gaspe Reel was the theme played by Bill Spence, or "Fenig;s All Stars"
Anyway this version is very close to what I remember hearing.
-
I looked at the first example on YouTube, then it continued into this version played on a three row.

Check out that right hand ornamentation! :D

Somewhat rough, and I'm not sure how ready but...played on Hohner 1040s first in G then merging seamlessly >:E into A...
Recorded on my phone, as no one has owned up to losing the camera charger yet....
Apologies to all French speakers for the omission of the acute accent....https://youtu.be/P17aJCEYtr0

I was looking around for various version of Gaspé Reel and found this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VwltqwDCGKk&feature=youtu.be (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VwltqwDCGKk&feature=youtu.be). It has the C music (which is borrowed from Money Musk). I first heard the tune in the 1980s on an album I bought in Montreal. It seems to have morphed a bit as it's crossed the atlantic. I've also listened to versions by Tufty Swift on "How to Make a Bakewell Tart" and also by Keith Kendrick on "Well Seasoned" where he attributes it to a recording by Leadbelly. Does anyone know of this version?
My recording coming soon.

I was also trawling around yesterday, and there seem to be at least 3 very different tunes with the same name, including one by Jean Carrignan which bears no resemblance to ToTM...(which I also learned from Tufty's album...)

Didn't sound that good when they lived with me...must be the air up there... ;)

Interesting that in this video the third part contains 8 bars but it's 7 bars in Serge Carrier's version posted at the start. 8 bars sounds more familiar (:)

Here's my version of this, played on a one-row Robert Boutet box in D
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5L9JH9a1uxM
I've gone for a 3 part version, not necessarily *the* 3 part version though. Altered it a bit to make it fit on a 1 row, because the accidentals in the original 3rd part is I believe impossible on a 1 row - you need G#.
Cheers,
Clive

Hello friends,
Here is my try on this one:
https://youtu.be/CGsWCQAYn9E
The bass part is half of the "time" most people did, I hope it doesn't sound bad... :-\
Happy Spring time!
-
Thanks folks - on to the next tune now! As ever, stick late submissions on the end here - always open to extras.
-
Sorry it's late - been up to my ears in editing a magazine and recording other people but the studio's nice and empty now...
Gaspé Reel on a Castagnari Max in D: https://youtu.be/_bjrcfINO1c
(thanks to Serge Carrier for this version, especially the third section which I hadn't heard before)

Youtube settings are private - looking forward to hearing it.
-
I'm just getting Pepa Pig...is it me? ???
-
YouTube up to silly tricks - said it couldn't save it, but did - as a private video...
Should be OK now.
-
yes it's ok as in 'viewable' and is more than 'ok' to listen to!
I do like that.
