Right-o; off to learn this tune now! Suggested by Helena, and recently made as famous as it's going to get by recent versions by Leveret and Lady Maisery comes this wonderful tune...
Here's Pete's demonstration on a Bb/Eb box https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vbp8z0omqFM (you can get that chord drone effect on a typical D/G by holding down the C chord button if you were wondering), and here of course is the Leveret version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f37uTGIMnsY
... and thank you again Helena, here's some ABC from which you can get the dots.

I like some of the chords on the second version particularly Bill - might be stealing a few of those (:)

Just found the Lady Maisery version on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DfwLn9v2Yl4) - love it!
(and plenty of harmony ideas there, too!)

So creative, so musical, simply marvelous. Thanks, Anahata.

Good 'un. Thanks for the link. It's a great tune, and a personal favourite. This makes me reconsider how I play it.

I was lucky enough to be at their album launch in London a few weeks ago. Stunning stuff, I think I fell in love with the tune again that night.

[[[ Slight detour; the new Lady Maisery album is stunning; I love their version of Bagpipers, and it's not even the strongest track on the album... not by a long way. They're a cracking band. ]]]
Detour over, here's my late night recording of this tune:
https://youtu.be/vE9g1J_fTd0
It's influenced by, and sounds rather like, the Leveret version I know... sorry, can't get that version out of my head, so there's always going to be a little of it in there. Played on the Castagnari Mory in D/G.
Cheers,
Clive

I'm enjoying your versions guys, but this is really embarrassing, after falling in love with the tune on the Leveret album and then again when Lady Maisery recorded it I've had it on the 'to learn' list for a while. Now, after successfully nominating it for ToTM I'm really struggling to do anything creative with the left hand that sounds good enough to my ears. I don't simply want to copy anyone else's version but I am really struggling with this one :(

I wouldn't worry about it - it's one of those tunes it's hard to think of many things to do with. Play it as you would if you were playing it in a session and enjoy...

So here goes, I plan to record a solo box version before the end of the month (I know, get your skates on Nell) but for now here's a thing that happened today. I was noodling around with the tune in the pub apres-morris, the guys picked it up and joined in. Here is our rough and ready take on playing the tune for the first time in public/together/at all:
Bagpipers (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O0bk2dky98Y&feature=youtu.be)
I am joined by Colin Messer on whistle and Phil Underwood on fiddle.
[Edit: I must point out that the abandoned lager glasses on the table are nothing to do with us, we're good real ale drinking morris folk]

Thanks for clearing that up; I was concerned for a while.

Ever wish you hadn't started something? Well that, almost. I thought this would be a lovely tune to play around with and I was looking forward to lots of lovely versions but even my friends from our local sessions are utterly divided over this one, some love it, some are utterly indifferent.
I can't help thinking I'll do something else with this at a future date but for now here's a simple melodeon version, recorded on my lovely Baffetti Binci:

Nice one Nelly. And not for the first time you've spurred me on. Here's my version, another from the Dorking & Ewell Sessions stable.

Can anyone explain why the name of this tune is now Bagpipers and not the original The Bagpipes as in the William Mittell manuscript? Is it just down to the name used on Leveret's New Anything and everyone has just followed suit?

I can understand the divided views - it is a catchy tune which I often find myself humming but I quickly find it too repetitive as a listener when it is performed.

Mmm... probably... or at least quite possibly. It wouldn't be the first folk tune name to evolve that way.

Yep, this too, I am never quite sure that it fits the 'two As, two Bs, three times' session standard although I can see that if we were to deviate from this in a session it would cause chaos or at the very least an interesting 'arrangment' of the tune.

Lovely work as always Alan. I guess this one is certainly going to become a regular feature of the Dorking and Ewell sessions despite half the regulars being apparently unmoved by it.

I've really tried to like Bagpipers, particularly as I've learned to play it quite quickly, but it has become the worse kind of earworm, a kind of mindless dirge that I can't get out of my head...

Here is my stab at The Winter's End. Learned from Liam O'Flynn CD where he is playing uilleann pipes so this qualifies for both Theme and Tune of the Month!
