Hi,
I am planning on attending this event at the weekend and wondered: i) are any other Melneters going, ii) any advice on where to go/avoid?
-
I am hoping to go to the Shakespeare on the Saturday night and it would be really good to see you if you can get to it. Can't make the rest of it due to family commitments! Also would have been nice to offer accommodation but will have a housefull. If you are still here on the Monday evening and want to sally forth into Derbyshire with me I am planning a trip to a session in Heage. Let me know.
Cheers

I'll be around quite a lot of the time, mostly in The Shakespeare or the Kelham Island Tavern which are not far from each other. There have been some recent programme changes after the sad recent closure of the Three Tuns.

I plan to attend Saturday night at the Shakespeare, session hosted by The Tonic, which includes fellow Melnetters Gav Atkin & Malcolm Woods.

Looks like the Shakespeare is the place to go. Hope to see some of you there.

Ahhh.... One day.... :-\
Have a good thrunge everyone (:)
Q
Using my friends verb ' to thrunge'
Def: to have a jolly good thrash making lots of music with lots of friends.....
To... Enjoy! ;D

Aye. I think if I were to choose the city I would like to live near, it would be Sheffield. It seems to have a great folk music scene, and so many good performers live there, and thereabouts. Of course, the place I really want to live, is Whitby. Pity they're quite so far apart, 100 miles each way. is a bit much for an evening's sessioneering.

When I were (very) young I went to Sheffield Polytechnic. There was a folkclub at the Three Cranes and a few pop-up affairs elsewhere. Mind you, like everone else I played guitar then.
Funny how the folk scene has grown since they threw me out...

I was born in Sheffield and lived there until I was 18 (in 1965). In addition to the Three Cranes, there was a folk club at the Queen pub on Scotland Street (distant relatives of mine were the licensees), where Tony Capstick was a resident.

The guy who ran the club at the Three Cranes back then was confined to a wheelchair. As the club was in the usual upstairs room, someone had to carry him upstairs. I sometimes wonder whether there's a connection with my increasingly frequent back problems? I wish I could remember his name.

When I first became associated with the Morris and folk scene, 1977, the centre of gravity for all things folk was Cheltenham.
It spawned Gloucestershire Old Spot Morris, The Old Swan band , The Song Wainers (?) to mention but a few.
Wonder how long Sheffield will hold the crown, though it does seem to have a huge strength in depth at present.

I'm planning to be there for at least some of it - haven't given any thought yet to which sessions I'll go to, but it sounds like Saturday night in the Shakespeare is a must!
@Mike C: I'll also be going to Dave Ingledew's session in the Spanker, Heage, on Monday - guess that must be the one you mean, so see you there if not in Sheffield over the weekend. Also - do you know if there is a session in the Traveller's Rest on Thursday, and if so will you be there? (John from WDB here)

Thought that Gloucestershire was one of the few areas in England to have more fiddlers than box players thanks to the Old Swans .

well when you have Paul Burgess and Floss Headford around, what more do you want?

Just back from Sheffield. Excellent weekend! Great to see so many young musicians, so much talent. Many thanks to the organisers.
