Hello all,
As mooted in the suggestions for new tunes thread, we're going to try a different format to TOTM and ThOTM this month; the idea being we have a theme, and then somewhere between 2 and 4 *suggested* tunes of that type you could try (so the suggestions become the TOTM, even though there are more than one). Vary the difficulty of those, and you have something for everyone, or people can choose to do something else completely. There's no poll - it comes down to my random choices, albeit influenced by what people put in the suggested tunes thread, but the fact you can record any of the choices, or ignore them if you want, gives everyone choice too.
So.... this month, despite what I said in the suggested tunes thread, let's do waltzes! Any waltz is fine, not necessarily just 3 time ones either. But in the spirit of TOTM, here's 4 waltzes you might consider if you haven't already got one you really want to try:
1) Valse Batignolles Clichy (as nominated below, thank you!), here's the ABC from that thread:

2) La Marianne, from the pen of Mr Fred Paris ladies and gentlemen. Guaranteed to go like a dream at at any French (or indeed English) music session up and down the land. This one has been a TOTM thread already... so there's *LOTS* of inspiration out there. http://forum.melodeon.net/index.php/topic,5713.0.html which if you go to the start of the thread, has the following ABC courtesy of Steve:

3) Valse des Jouets, written by Michel Faubert of (I think) Quebec; fits beautifully, and I do mean beautifully, on a 2 row 8 bass. Trickier than La Marianne, but worth it. Find some ABC here:
http://forum.melodeon.net/index.php/topic,19555.msg237087.html#msg237087
Here's one of my takes of this in Bb/Eb (sorry!) http://www.melodeonvideo.co.uk/2011/05/03/valse-des-jouets-played-by-clive-williams/ and also in G/C http://www.melodeonvideo.co.uk/2012/11/13/valse-de-jouets-gc-version-played-by-clive-williams-on-melodeon/ ; I'm sure there will be other versions on youtube too.
4) Sherbourne Waltz (the waltz version of Orange in Bloom) - we have a TOTM thread for this one too, here: http://forum.melodeon.net/index.php/topic,3405.0.html from which this ABC comes:
X: 1
T:Sherborne Waltz

EGE|DGA|BdB|A2B/A/|GFE|DGA|BGG|G3||
or you can still choose to learn/record something completely different if you want. In fact, if you come across anything interesting in the various festival workshops going on at this time, why not post it for us all to look at and learn?
There we go - let's give this new format a go, and see how it takes off shall we? Let's have a good pickup - have a go if you're even slightly considering it, because it would be rather a shame to let things fizzle out, wouldn't it? Use it or lose it!
Cheers,
Clive

Whilst I'm in the mood, here's the Brunswick Waltz newly recorded for this month.
https://soundcloud.com/thrupenny-bit/the-brunswick-waltzwma
I've used a new to me Hohner Erika in DG. Not had it long and am still getting to grips with it hence it being a bit 'breathy' in places.
It has a full sound, and characteristics I'm not quite used to yet, but not bad for an old 'un.
The box, not me..... well, ok. Point taken ;)

Wow I really like this playing and even more is your spectacular bass line !
Here's a waltz I recorded earlier this year in a church in Bury St. Edmunds :-

Gave these a listen in between the showers (!) - nice playing - I enjoyed the really steady and light feel of them.

Called this one Tune of the Month as it was one of the suggestions. As Clive mentioned, it does sit nicely under the fingers, but remains something of a fingertwister!

Here is a tune I wrote for Dan and Felina Mason who got married 3 weeks ago. It's called Felidan Hochding - a deliberately enigmatic title - but simply explained as a combination of their names, and the German and English words for wedding - hochzeit and wedding. (Felina was born in Germany) Kerstin (my fiancé and Felina's mother) and I also composed a couple dance to go with it, but you will just have to imagine that!

Here's my attempt at Valse Batignolle Clichy.
Seeing as it has a tricky F (Eb in C) in that chromatic interlude between A and B parts and also that there's been a fair bit off chatter about Club boxes here this week, I thought I'd let "Darth" the Hohner Club IIB give it a go. So here he is breathing a little wheezily and waltzing away in glorious stereophonic sound...

Great Playing Luke- that really made me want to learn this tune!
Also this video has a lot of good things going for it:
1) Great playing
2) In the garden (as discussed in previous threads)
3) unrelenting melodeon face, expertly maintained through the end of the video- well almost anyway,i may have just barely detected a small trace of a w ll deserved smile as you walk to the camera
4) nice sounding box
10/10!

Thanks very much Grape Ape, I'll work on maintaining my melodeon face through the end of the next one ;)

Nice rendition indeed, Luke. We'll definitely have to connect in person sometime soon. Especially as we probably have the only two O-B Super IIs in the Bay Area. (:)

I feel a bit of a cheapskate as my little waltz is so short! But it is beautiful I think - La Dame Blanche, by Alain Pennec: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9_7jpnJeno

This is a tune that I've just written a contrechant for - Adieu Ma Dedee (https://soundcloud.com/playandteach/adieu). So here's a soundcloud version (rather than video because I've had to splice together the two parts). I need to learn how to record better - I think the mic is too far away this time, with a lot of room in the sound. But the point of the upload is to show the contrechant rather than my playing.

Here's a little known waltz made famous by Tom Jones .....

-
What key do you play that waltz in Kev? I'm trying to learn it and the chords I have are in G which doesn't seem quite right. I think it was in Am when Mr Reed wrote it.
-
Here's a couple of waltzes for you; neither of which are on my "recommended" list :-)
Valse Gitanes - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=avjVZp-UH3I ; a Chavannee classic written by Eric Montbel, and here played on a Hohner Club C/F in C. Fits on any 2 row beautifully. Isn't it funny how some of the best tunes to fit a melodeon aren't actually written by melodeon players?
La Petit Bal Marine - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eTuk-Al1zpQ ; François Deguelt's musette waltz, learned from the playing of great french musician, Marc Perrone. This version is in Am and G (on a G/C Hohner Lilliput conversion by Kay Albrecht); pretty much the only way you can sensibly fit it on a 2 row 8 bass instrument. The original was in Am and A I think. This is a quick, early attempt at this at resurrecting this (first attempted 25 years ago) - the version by, for example, 21 Boutons shows I've some way to go, but the video has picked up a dislike within literally a couple of minutes of me posting it! It's not *THAT* bad! We're up the dusty end for this one.
Enjoy folks,
Clive
-
They're great Clive. There is a an abc of Le Bal Marine taken from 21 boutons on The Session site. My and player has crashed can someone convert it into sheet music for me? I'll definitely learn these waltzes. They will fit the lower octave on my instrument with the low G#.

La Petit Bal de la Marine, at the Embraud course.
Here's Emmanuel sketching it out as he tries out the GC bando melodeon I made with him last month in France. Nice chromatic bass, helped by those extra two bass buttons, I expect.

That's just lovely Jack. There was a DG one I played briefly in Witney that was exceptional, and this seems equally nice - just the low reeds being played here I think, is it Bandoneon or 3 voice?
And just out of interest, is that two 2 and a half row GCs you have now? I can always find a home for one of them.
-
Thanks, Arty, just had a look at it, and listening to Emanuel Pariselle play it on the low reeds of the GC, it struck me that it lies better in the low octave (of course he was playing it up the dusty end with low reeds - I think).

Literally only had time for one go at this so apologies that you can see a) half a melodeon face and b) very little right hand - I had to wedge my mobile in a set of headphones so it was the best I could manage! :)
Vicky.
p.s. I've just noticed you can hear my kids arguing over the end of this too!

I think your mobile recording looks and sounds better than all the gizmos I've tried. Well played too.

I haven't popped by for a while but couldn't resist this theme - I love waltzes. Here's one of the suggested tunes, La Marianne (recorded some time ago). I tried some variations, some more successful than others!

This is nice! It's a little different from what you normally would expect to hear here. (:)
I can't play with so precise articulation. >:(
Anyway, I came across a waltz adaptation of Oh, Susanna and thought it might show one of the two advantages of a Club box: It goes easily through three keys. The piece starts in F major, than switches to C major, goes back to F major, proceeds with the third part in Bb major and than repeats the beginning in F major. (My box plays one note lower, though.)
