Title: Paint for Liliput keyboard edge
Post by: Helena Handcart on June 20, 2018, 12:30:53 PM
Could anyone out there in Melnetland recommend a suitable paint for touching up the keyboard on a Hohner Liliput please? We currently appear to be running a home for miniature vintage German accordions, one of which has a keyboard with particularly worn paint and I'd like to refresh it.

Thanks

The most successful method I've found is to strip off all the old paint and re-spray with aerosol black gloss designed for car repairs.  In the long run it's much quicker than messing about trying to re-touch worn and damaged old paint.  It is particularly hard to get a good finish over the old paint because the paint layer is very thick.  Its only a small component, and with a chemical paint stripper its a quick, though messy job.

Not being an authority on German paint manufacturing in the 1930s I’d guess that any hard wearing oil based paint intended for outdoor use would do.  With the colour mixing technologies available now  it should be possible to get a pretty good match.  I’d try Homebase or B&Q.

Thanks Theo, we* have a red D/G conversion in the herd that I think it came from you indirectly (via Guy Wyatt) and it has a beautifully finished keyboard so I'm guessing it has had that treatment.
