Last month was great; with a new lady member! We're ever only a few, but some good nights have been had. Come along and see, you might just enjoy it.

We will hold the next session (Monday 5 November) at the Fox and Hounds, Coalburns, Ryton NE40 4JN at 1930 -2130 hrs. We're in the North but have changed the venue. Eshed will be joining us before setting off to walk Hadrians Wall the next morning, camping on the way. He's braver than many in't North
We'll plan to run some sessions in the South in 2019.

Is that the "Deep South", Nigel; like Darlington or some other strange land?

Yes, it's that far South but not in the real South, such as Leeds. I once saw a map which divided Great Britain into the North, Midlands and South - Leeds was in the Midlands. A good wind up, eh.
I once watched Carlisle v Leeds football game (no love between those supporters) when a
Leeds guy fell over (he was diving) and feigned injury. The Carlisle lot chanted "soft southerners".
Winston - we are thread creeping!

It's one of those annoying things, I have a table tennis match on in Whitley Chapel that night. So close to the venue, but can't be in two places at once. We won't finish before 10pm. Good luck with the venue and the evening.

Title: North East Melodeon Group - Next session on 28 February
Post by: Nigel on February 17, 2019, 11:31:04 PM
Folks.
We now have 2 sessions being run within our Group - in the North and South both on  a monthly basis.

The next Southern Session will be held on Thursday 28 February from 7-10 at pm at the Britannia Inn, 1 Archer St, Darlington DL3 6LR. Please contact Janice - jervaulx@me.com - if you need a lift from the Railway Station.
At the first session, we agreed that a slow and steady element for relatively new starters would be held at 7-8 pm in order to learn a new tune. More expert players could join us from 8 pm onwards.
We'll learn Rogues March (dots are given in our facebook page "North East Melodeon Group") in the slow session next Thursday. Our own Bob Ellis and Mel Biggs give us examples in www.youtube.com/watch?v=X8SypNJG3mk and www.youtube.com/watch?v=-KZb4lu_b1o
Subsequently, we'll play this tune, Shepton Mallet (learnt last time) and look at other tunes to learn in the future.

I'm not clear from the last post when the next north event is, and whether there is a tune or two set for that. I'll try to get there, if at all possible, now that I'm playing again.

Hi Folks,
The invitation to the session tonight (10 April(8pm)) is at the bottom of this email - just click (or copy and paste into google) the link at "Join Zoom Meeting".
We agreed to return to the old format where one of us teaches the others a tune in each session. So far, we have the following tunes (but everyone will have a chance to teach their tune over the weeks/months ahead):-.
Nigel - Rue de Pres
Lesley - Valse Ollu
Ray - Theme Vanataise
Pete - Bonny at Morn
                      Ollie - South Wind

Peter volunteered to do Bonny at Morn this Friday. Please PM me if you want the dots. I'll send some links to videos if you wish but this is very much Peter's show!
We'll also play some other well known tunes and perhaps have a few Friday night drinks!

Mels next workshop will be next Friday (17/4) followed by our session. For information, she's doing a re-run of the Lounge Bar for another set of members on Tuesday.

Cheers
Nigel

Hi Everyone,
Dave Gray will lead the next set of three workshop sessions. These will start on Friday 8 May (7-8pm),  We'll run them at fortnightly intervals. Dave will charge the same as Mel.
We have agreed to do Rue des Pres for this workshop. Please PM me if you want to join and need the dots. Dave will be sending a video based upon the intended tuition. For now, I've indicated some links below. The tune is in G and Dave is more than happy for GC box players to participate although he won't give specific tuition
The tune is the first one in this video. Speed and fancy bits will come later!. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ceGXAb4qLLI
Dave is playing with Jim Boyle. Rue des Pres starts at 1557. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aWHvPNGxGGM&feature=youtu.be&list=PLVufORD3WShQPgcgCuptqH1IPj24YcAzM .
This video doesn't start at the beginning of the tune. Dave is playing with Jim Boyle. https://www.facebook.com/alpin.mcgregor.1/videos/10222556217162718/UzpfSTcwNTk0ODY0NTpWSzoyNDgzNjgyMjM1MjI5Nzc0/

GC BOX ALERT.
We're now running another sub-group for GC players.
Mark Insley will provide tuition for this sub-group.  Please PM me if interested and Mark will contact you about dates, times and tunes. We'll run it on my zoom account. Mark will charge the same as Mel and Dave - aiming to help our pro musicians.
For information, Mark is from the Newcastle Uni Folk Music degree course. He plays for Morris sides, French dances etc. He likes playing in the continental style. He teaches face to face and electronically.
This is an example of him playing.

GC 3rd Workshop tomorrow 28 May at 6-7pm.

Mark will cover Bourree De Marrakech,
This tune is a punchy and anthemic two time bourree. It is a fairly simple tune with a lot of room for adding elements and variations throughout a performance. As well as teaching the tune, he will explore a few ideas and techniques you could use to spice up and vary the way you play it.
Please PM me if you want to attend and want the dots.

GC Workshop Tomorrow (Thursday 10/6) at 6pm
Please PM me if you want the dots.
Mark will be teaching Chanj tu, a Breton tune for the dance, an dro retourne. A popular tune and song which I personally think sits very well in C in the upper octave.
He first found the tune listening to the late, great Bernard Loffett. This is a particularly fun video, with Bernard absolutely shredding it playing to a packed dance floor.  It also gives you an idea of what the dance looks like. Singing and dancing in bare feet are not compulsory.

Hi Nigel, Well done for organising these. Can I just ask what the format / aim is of the session? Is it mainly to learn the tune, or is there more going on about style/ technique etc.?
Hope you're keeping well.

Hi Pete!

I teach these classes. In each class I teach the tune in full and then demonstrate any stylistic techniques you can use with it.

I cover each tune phrase by phrase using a combination of teaching by ear and sheet music. I then teach chords and any stylistic aspects we can add.

For example, in tonight's tune I will be demonstrating an interesting bass rhythm we can put with the tune as well as breaking down a particular ornament that fits nicely. For each session I provide sheet music as well as a youtube video of the tune being played.

If you're interested in attending tonight, just drop me an email at markinsley@live.co.uk

All the best!

Mark
