Title: Theme of the Month for October 2018: Travel and Transport
Post by: Clive Williams on October 02, 2018, 09:42:33 AM
Hi all; thank you for the excellent suggestion, let's do anything related to, however loosely, transport and travel. That includes anything with trips, ships, roads, etc, and plenty of more tangential thoughts too I'm sure!

Happy posting!

Cheers,

Clive

Here's a couple I made earlier:
Trip to Stowmarket and Pony Trot Polka, both played on my Wesson Clipper one-row in C.
https://soundcloud.com/steve_freereeder/trip-to-stowmarket-ponytrot

The 'Trip to Stowmarket' was composed by me in the East Anglian style and is dedicated to Katie and John Howson, former directors of of the East Anglian Traditional Music Trust. 'Pony Trot Polka', inspired here by the playing of Katie Howson, was composed by Norfolk dulcimer player Billy Bennington.

I love the Pony trot Polka - it's one of my favourite tunes. I think you can hear the jingle of bells on the pony's harness.  (:)

It is a great tune...one of my favourites for playing for step dancing on the rare occasions I get the chance...

Obviously I love the Ponytrot Polka too!

Not composed by Billy Bennington though, he said he'd learned it from Billy Cooper senior, and the B music is clearly a version of Golden Slippers. Ah now there's a theme for future months ... footwear!

Thanks for the correction, Katie! Of course, you are right and I should read the notes on the tunes in my copy of 'Before the Night Was Out' more thoroughly!  :|bl

Do you know, I couldn't find a tune I wanted to record that I haven't already done in Lord knows how many videos I've done by now! So I wrote one, and here it is, an ode to the city (town) of roundabouts and cycling redways, Trip to Milton Keynes:

Played on the G/C Lilliput, and played in C.

Cheers,

Clive

Wow. Now that's raising the bar!
Not just impressed with the process: I thoroughly enjoy the result too.

A Journey Just Begun : Phil Cunningham Three times without repeats.

The title aptly describes my ongoing adventure with melodeons!

Another from Mick Reeve's dropbox of notation, (I understand the original is in C).

All the best

Why not? I've seen his wheelbarrow, so I'm sure that counts as transport. (:)

Thanks for the encouragement. I think that the sung version is getting more stuck in my head now. I might re-record it, now that the played versions, which don't seem to fit with the words, are beginning to fade and are less likely to interfere, allowing me to perhaps play it more confidently.

Alright, here comes another homebrew from myself.
I've been rummaging through folktunefinder to find a song that I would like to learn for this month's ThotM. I was not very successful to be quite honest. So I decided I could simply write a song myself.

I had a few goals with this song:

I very much hope that you like the song and get the same positive vibes from it as I do.

The song is called "The Long Wound Road".

For anyone interested, I will also add the ABC for the tune:

I had a few goals with this song:
  • I wanted to use my new Bb/Eb Erika. (Success)
  • I wanted to practice my single row playing, as I normally play almost completely across the rows on every song I learn. While the A and B part are played completely on the outer row, I needed to use some crossrow playing in the C part. Still a success in my book. (Success)
  • I wanted to capture the feeling I have when I go hiking. Upbeat, happy and free. (Up to you to decide! (:) )

Wow, that's a great tune. Ticks all the boxes too. Love the up and down the row playing.

Enjoyed this tune and the playing. Lovely sound from the instrument. Particularly like the B part. You are right, I think in that it gives that positive vibe.

Thank you for the feedback so far, I'm glad you enjoyed it. (:)

Going on a hike and conciously enjoying the freedom to wander around is just one of the activities that I enjoy very much. Transporting (Ha, see what I did there?) this feeling for this month's ThotM was the idea behind this tune and I'm happy it seems to come across as envisioned.

Road to the North.

A tune that all self respecting northerners should play! It was written by Alistair Anderson, as Theo said above, as part of a suite of composed tunes called Steel Skies. See - http://www.topicrecords.co.uk/alistair-anderson-steel-skies-tscd427%c2%a0/
A great record, its become something of a icon, with some tunes now being widely played. Try playing The Air for Maurice Ogg before moving into Road to the North.

Found this tune (also a song) by Theo Marzials, a British eccentric composer and poet. He seems to compete with William McGonagal for the title of Britain's worst poet (according to academics who have an opinion on such things). Anyway, I decided I like the tune.

Nice one Fred - excellent tune. I'm doubly impressed that you wrote the music in Bb. I like to have any dots relate to my D/G box and let the instrument transpose. Once again I'd have loved to have seen it on YT so we could see your new box as well as hear it. :||:

And great to be reminded of the Road to the North - a tune half forgotten personally so time to revive it.

Thank you, Mcgrooger. Ah well, writing a song in Bb did not feel all to different to me than writing a tune in D or G or C or whatever. Setup the key in your abc file, find the starting note and go from there. :D

As for video material... I do understand the preference of people to see what others are playing, and to get direct feedback on the box model, fingering, etc. I don't even have a webcam, so recording is currently not possible at all. But to be quite honest, filming myself just feels absolutely weird to me. I prefer to simply record it a few times through via my microphone and mixer and then I'm able to compress/normalise/whatever in audacity. There's enough internal pressure when I press the red button... can't imagine how awful I'd play when I also need to make a straight face or even look happy when playing. :D

Here's my offering.

Lunardy's Ride in an Air Balloon.
This tune is from Joshua Jackson's 1798 manuscript.
when I play this I tend to find that I can't stop playing it but I have limited it here to a couple nof times through  (:)

I'm afraid it's on soundcloud, but it was that or nothing. Hope it doesn't put people off too much because it's a rather jolly little tune.
I've never heard anyone else play it so what you  hear is all mine (and Mr. Jackson's).

I am thoroughly impressed by those of you who can compose a contribution, and lovely contributions at that!

Failing that, do tractors count?

Here is a simplified version of Toon Van Mierlo's (Naragonia) 'Samen op de tractor' [Together on the Tractor] - I couldn't manage the first section in the original key, so put it all into C, which makes it less interesting. But that's the least of my problems. Tempo I think is the issue here. Anyways, constructive criticism always welcomed with open arms.

A pretty wee waltz called Les Gondoliers.  I first heard it played on cabrette and chromatic accordion by Flor du Zinc and learned it by ear.  Attached is the sheet music for cabrette, which has more or less the same notes!
