Title: FAR TOO FLIPPIN' FRIENDLY!
Post by: HallelujahAl on September 01, 2009, 11:16:04 AM
THIS FORUM IS FAR TOO FLIPPIN' FRIENDLY!

I've been a member now since September 13th 2008 - that's nearly one whole year - and not one - no, NOT ONCE - has anyone been flamed or trolled or whatever else it is that we forii are supposed to get up to. All I've had is is nice polite comment, supportive suggestions, and sometimes people have even actually, really, been helpful! It's just not on!

Come on folk - let's get stuck into one another properly! No holds barred - take no prisoners! Let's be a little more agressive in our opinions.
Here's one for starters:

I think melodeons suck!

AL

btw I'm French Polishing a 30 key wooden ended Anglo concertina  at the moment and I may have imbibed a little too much shellac ;D

I agree with Al, though I really really hate to say it.
And not only do they suck. They also blow.

I wondered who'd be first in with that response :D

Here's another:

I think that there should be a PA section on this forum  >:E

Quite right. A P(ersonal) A(ssistant) is absolutely essential to move my bellows in and out for me.
At the risk of sounding (being) sexist my PA should be of the feminine gender. Which raises the
thread drift question:- are melodeons male or female?? I think mine is female as it only works
right when I'm not paying attention.

Quite agree, a discussion section on amplification would benefit many.

You get a much better finish if you apply the shellac direct to the wood,  drinking it and then breathing the fumes onto the wood is so slow.

Well,

I kinda like it around here the way it is! Sorry!

Then again, I'm using a glue that's making me rather cheery, rather than the depressing shellac!

Lester - that's not just any Hallelujah Lassie! It looks remarkably like William Booth's daughter, Catherine, a very early picture of her with her Jefferies concertina. She eventually went on to become General herself of course, leading the Army across the world. And a very good concertina player by all accounts - she was responsible for forcing encouraging Salvation Army Officers to use concertinas/melodeons & accordions in their ministry as it is an extremely portable and (in the case of melodeons) loud and effective tool for leading worship. Sadly fashions changed and the squeezeboxes got left behind --- but I believe in REVIVAL >:E

What is the current fashion? Its not a tepidly strummed guitar and keyboard I hope? After all this is the Salvation ARMY we are talking about not some feeble entity.

Fairly even split between rock bands (guitars & drums - and loud incoherent wailing from adenoidal teenagers) and (still!) Brass Bands and similar musical ensembles. And some fantastic music is still being made these days. Long gone are the days when a young officer cadet would be made to take English Concertina lessons whilst doing their time at the Army's training college in Denmark Hill.

Then there are the nutter's like me...musically I'm an aberration...but you'll find out all about that at Graeme's workshop ;D

Last Christmas my little band and I carolled at Chatsworth House (the seat of the Duke of Devonshire) - it was perishing cold - and we played for two days solid - madness. My contentment was nowhere to be seen at that time ;D

BTW if you like SA Bands here a really good link to a site with loads of old recordings - including a few Concertina solos etc as well:

Well, that might depend on which criterions you are applying, because people have different agendums, don't they?  Perhaps it's all just part of the florums and faunums of life! I mean, do we not all play accordea?

I'm afraid that Al is, for once, wrong.  :o Accordion is obviously the plural of the G(r)eek original Accordios, meaning something like "something that can only be played by someone with a funny face!.  :-*

Ach! Silly me - I was getting my Latin & Greek all mixed up. Now I remember. Accordios was the semi-divine twin of Discordios, the twins were the product of a rather unhealthy relationship between a mute swan (the Goddess Freereedia) and an old grey man called Paolo Soprano. Mythology suggests that the old grey man (after the conjugal act had taken place) was magically turned into a trumpeting rhino, the sound of which is highly valued still in some parts of the world (Ireland for one).

Oh well, all's well, ends well!
AL ;D
