Title: Error 403
Post by: Lester on November 18, 2018, 12:45:50 PM
I am getting increasing numbers of failing to post Error 403. I get it on Chrome on my Mac Book, Chrome on my W10 pc and, new today, on Crome on my Android phone. This has been going on for years but seems be getting worse. Can fix the non phone ones by clearing cookies but it is a Pita especially if I have typed a long reply which gets deleted

It has happened to me in the past, and once within the last 10 days I think.

I actually abandoned the posting becasue of it!!

Firefox on Fedora-28.

I can't say what's happening, but my work-around has been to compose my reply in Notes, then copy and paste to reply.  If it doesn't post I still have the text for another try.

I have this 2 out of 3 times I want to post things on this forum. I normally Ctrl+A and Ctrl+C the things I'm writing, so that I can paste it in a new reply if the error occurs. Is there any way to permanently solve this?

Ah I think that’s our old friend mod_security on the server.

Do you have the text of the post Lester?  Sometimes it can be one word that triggeres that error.

It's sometimes a problem on my Chromebook - solution, delete cookies - bit not on Windows + Firefox or on Android phone.

So frequent I rarely post. Get it in Chrome and FF on macbook but then go to other (old) macbook and it's fine. Or not.
PITA for sure

I also get this most of the time that I post, I find reloading (⌘R) a few times usually works on a Mac mini

Lester, I think what Theo wanted was not the error message, but the text that you were trying to post.

mod_security works partly by looking at text posted to databases (which, behind the scenes, is what this forum is) and checking for sequences of characters that might be part of an injection attack.

I've heard it's a pain to set up and configure to work properly so it doesn't give false alarms like this.

Not sure how it can be post text based as I copy the post before trying to post and if it fails I then clear cookies and paste and post

I don’t know how it works either Lester, but in the past we had similar error messages that were eventually tracked down to a very heavy handed word based porn filter.  Clearly something different now. We have changed web hosts three times since then.

There was a time when there was a problem trying to PM abc tunes which was sorted when the server was changed. Looking at Lester's abc file of the Abbess I notice that there are two changes of time signature in the code lines that are between square brackets [] like html tags are. Perhaps because it looks a bit like a tag it is being rejected because the 'tag' cannot be read?
For a long time now I've used copy and paste to put my posts into Notepad before hitting Post or Preview. I've lost too many posts in the past!

I am now seemingly unable to post at all without first resetting cookies after any short beak. This means 7 separate clicks, two data entries and having to login. This happens on:

MacBook Pro running Mojave and Chrome the latest (but seems to be independent as Chrome has updated twice recently)
iMac running High Sierra and earlier version of Chrome
W10 PC, up to date OS and Chrome (different to the Mac version)

So 3 operating systems, two computer types, three versions of the browser, seems to say it's not me or my kit but a website problem.

Am starting to lose the will to post so visit and comment much less often (maybe a good thing)

Sorry to hear that Lester

I’m using a similar range of kit, and never seeing this problem,  so it’s not a general website problem.  It could be related to your location and IP address.
I can get our web hosts to check it out.  The one other thing I can think of if youve not done this already is to restart your router.

I've raised a ticket with the web host.

Next time it happens Lester please take a screenshot and make a note of the date and time and forward them to me.

I get this problem most of the time (mac) I find it works after reloading the page (command R) a few times, bit of a pain but I don't post much.

I've found a possible cause of this error and removed it.   Please tell me if you get the error again.

I've done a bit of digging and the references I can find to this error (the one with WEBMA5TER) all are connected to SMF forums.  I've removed one plugin that has been implicated, but if that doesn't prevent the error then I think the only permanent cure would be to move the forum to a more modern software package.  SMF has been around for a long time, and I don't think there is much active updating going on.

That would be a shame, because SMF seems to work well most of the time.
I'm on two other forums that use discourse (http://discourse.org) and I'm not sure I like it much, but maybe I'm just showing my age. Discourse is, at least, admittedly more mobile-friendly.

It seems to have been stable for a couple of weeks now, fingers crossed, and many thanks
