Hi all - this month's selection!
Dorset 4 Hand Reel - here's a session standard we haven't done yet; ABC and video courtesy of Lester, here: https://lesters-tune-a-day.blogspot.com/2012/10/tune-33-dorset-four-hand-reel-i-i-can.html
Guide Me O Great Redeemer - classic hymn, here played by Pikey under the name 'Guide Me O Great Jehovah' - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iKcju7Zp6qE
The Fighting Temeraire - written by Sandy Shallis; here's a video of it being played by Sandy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YcC4H5jvv8o
Harry Kitchener's Jig - written by Paul Sartin, and here played by his group Faustus - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kOy26yZZYNo ; couldn't find any melodeon closeups of this one. Anyone got one?
Thanks Paedar and McGrooger for the great suggestions!
Cheers,
Clive

I'd be most grateful for an abc transcription of the melody for Harry Kitchener's. I have the Faustus album with it on but lack the ability to transcribe tunes and I find this a tricky one to get by playing along.
-
Oh I do hope as well that someone has the abc buried in their collections and is willing to dig it out for us.
(I still remember having to transcribe Vrangfanten myself... What a pita that was. (:) )
-
I had forgotten but Cwm Rhonndha is the name of the tune to "Guide me O thou Great Redeemer" and the Hymn itself was originally written in Welsh.
There is ABC and dots on Folk Tune finder (search for Cwm Rhonndha).

I've just done this from the YouTube Faustus Video. Since I voted for the tune...

Obviously I've had to make a guess where to put the bar lines where it occasionally deviates from regular 6/8.
I chose a bar of 3/8 between the A and B music, but it could instead have been a 6/8 1st time bar and 9/8 2nd time bar.
Elsewhere I've made a 9/8 bar where it seemed to make sense to me.
Also I put in the chords they are playing in the last section; the chords for the rest of it are fairly obvious/I couldn't be bothered :|glug

PS they play two tunes on that video: I hope Harry Kitchener's was the first, not the second...
-
Thank you Anahata. I'm pretty sure it is the first tune on the vid. I think the album is on Spotify too. I wasn't sure that there was a change in time signature but had a feeling there was. I'll have to give it a proper go now. Thanks again. (:)

Do the dots for Fighting Temeraire exist anywhere?

On some dot com...
Edit: Proper time.

I love the way the Fighting Temeraire is harmonized. I have little problem picking out the basic melody, but finding the harmony notes and chords will be an interesting challenge for me. Cool tune

Second is definitely The Piper's Rehash written by Benji Kirkpatrick: https://www.bbc.co.uk/music/tracks/n4c6jd

Thanks, Dick.

Does anyone else drift into Pride of Petravore while playing the Fighting Temeraire? The A sections seem to fit over each other well.
As a novice to folk, does that make them a good pair to play together or a terrible pair?

June Tabor's "Go Enlist" is where I head off to when hearing this.

S&G's "Sound of Silence" makes for an interesting mate.

With the votes currently at 17, 16, 15, 14 the poll is starting to look like Brexit minus the consequences.

No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. :D
Edit: Had to fix it to show 8 noes.

Who hasn't voted yet, but is open to bribes? Horribly close and I have a favourite. But then again, I guess, so do others.
-
So very very close!

Theme of the Month: play a Tune of the Month runner-up
-
If voting stops now, we've got 4 winners.
I'm staying up to see the count. Sunderland's always in first.
-
Does voting really finish at 11.04, or is that yesterday's time?
-
Is it an indicative, meaningful or meaningless vote?
-
You lot did this to me a few months back! I'm smarter this time round - I've already withdrawn my vote, so when it ends up in an inevitable 4-way tie, I simply cast my vote and break the tie. Nice try everyone! :-)
And yes, it ends at 11:04. The forum software is a bit rubbish in that it won't let me specify a time for a vote ending; only a date. If I want it to end at midnight, I have to set up the vote at midnight... so I go as close as I can, but don't worry too much about an hour or two either side.
-
I'm putting 2 bob on Sandy Shallis.
-
I couldn't possibly comment :-)
-
Or go for a recount on 30th April? counting the number of versions posted of each tune (by different individuals)
-
This is getting like ebay.
-
Oh, bravo! Who voted for Dorset 4 Hand reel in the split second I had the poll open to change my vote? That's my brilliant strategy shot down! Strategy 2 - reopen the poll and close it manually in the morning. Night night all; I'll close the poll about 9am.
-
Are you going to call that "The People's Vote" Clive?
-
Can we have an enquiry into possible vote manipulation by the Dorset Liberation Front ?
J
-
I'm starting a petition...... obviously >:E
-
Closed it 15 minutes early just in case of more .... shenanigans!
-
Can we have an enquiry into possible vote manipulation by the Dorset Liberation Front ?
I'll have you know that Dorset has recently been liberated from itself (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2019_structural_changes_to_local_government_in_England#Dorset), regardless of whatever the people were voting for (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-dorset-45141810)!!
I hope that, like our poor departed arbitrary very important council borders, that the other sections of this tune will not be so easily forgotten...
-
Oof. That's definitely not the outcome I was hoping for. Contemplating on skipping this month's tune...
-
...but a perfect opportunity for theme of the month, to play the one you did vote for.
