Title: Link to Melnet facebook page.
Post by: Winston Smith on June 21, 2019, 08:20:25 PM
Hello.
Someone posted a link to the public access Melnet facebook page the other day. For future nosiness, I dropped it into my favourites, but now it's not there! I've looked on here, but can no longer find the posting, can anyone help a poor old technophobe?

It's working now, thanks, but will it last?

It's worked for me since the group first started.

The best things never last. Carnations last for blinking ever. Pears are only perfectly ripe for 45 minutes.

You don’t need to know Nick.  It’s much better here.

Thanks Theo, I had a feeling.

It's gone from my bookmarks again! Maybe it's just not meant to be?

P&T, actually I believe that the best things really do last forever.

Facebook doesn’t work very well for the kind of discussion we have here.  The comments are all in one list and there is no effective way of going back to view an earlier discussion, or to search for topics that have been covered in the past.

While that's true, the restrictions on photo size here is one of the downsides, as well as not being able to post other types of files directly (music  and video). Yes, yes, you are thinking, but all you have to do is link to another URL.  I'm sure it's not news that internet has kind of moved on about a decade ago on the whole. I love what goes on here, but it's a bit old fashioned, like, dare I say it, reading a book?

I watch how the youth communicate now, and places like Facebook are too old fashioned for them, Snapchat is the embodiment of modern communication, not only is it instant and highly visual, but everything is temporary and lasts only 30 seconds (or is it less?)
The past has no meaning and conversations only exist in the present tense.

Dystopia is here, now.

On a lighter note, I do wish the photo restrictions were not quite as tiny as they are. I'm not a tech person, but it is a little surprising the format has never up dated for these standard "forum" type groups in the last 15 years or so...

Having a foot in both camps, I agree with Theo that this forum style provides a long term searchable archive of material, much of which remains relevant over many years. It is possible to search Facebook groups but few seem to know how - or to bother.

There is indeed a role for better photos, and while there are various ways of achieving it they do regularly stretch the capabilities of those less technically inclined.

Facebook and Ebay, for instance, will take whatever size photo you throw at them and they clearly have a tool to resize images to a manageable size range before they are published. Maybe a forum plugin along similar lines might be possible. Or exist.

Its the limitation of the forum software I’m afraid.  A more modern platform could include automatic compression of uploads.  The difficulty would be transferring all the history from here to a new forum.

"Dystopia is here, now."

Then my new persona should fit right in, surely!

Theo, I don't want to get "involved" with facebook, I just want to see any instruments for sale or wanted. I'm perfectly happy with Melnet for everything else melodeon-wise.

"Dystopia is here, now."

Ah but is it Diatonic Dystopia Winston ??

All praise and thanks to Big Brother's Theo and Clive at Boxsqueezing House for sustaining this little oasis in a mad mad mad mad world

Indeed! And how lovely to see you coming up for air, Richard.

"Ah but is it Diatonic Dystopia"

Whilst beginning to get a bit of a handle on melodeonists on general, I'd suspect that it might well be more of a Ginantonic Distopia.
