Thank you for the suggestion; let's have another nice general theme. Any tune in a minor key, waltz, mazurka, jig, reel, whatever - there are a *lot* of these, and they're all great :-)
Cheers,
Clive

That's a bit awkward for us non-musical dummies, but there's always next month.

Princess Royal , Longborough
https://youtu.be/vbhVUS2Dtjo
-
Pikey, that's a great version of Princess Royal, and very danceable!
I only ever dance it for a Fieldtown or Bampton jig in a major key.
Is the Longborough one in a minor key or have you tweaked it into the minor?

Minor often sounds kind of sad, if that's any help.
It's a minor problem anyway... ;)
-
Well, this theme fits something we recently did, playing the box I picked up from Rees at Witney in November. "A Bruxa" (Anton Seoane). As this affords a good view of my keyboard, I thought I'd share it here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=83x09haLgCA

I've just successfully recorded a video for this Theme of the Month and somehow managed to delete it together with the botched attempts. Anyone else had such a pleasure before? It's a bit unnerving to be hoenst because I've never had that happen when recording pure audio. :|glug
-
I've already recorded an audio version of this but figured it might fit this month's theme just fine:
An Italian Rant
https://youtu.be/U0ZYyl9wpQ4
Played in Cmin on an old Bb/Eb Hohner Erika from the 1930s.
At some point all of my boxes need to get the "triple R treatment" (i.e. revalve, rewax, retune) but at least they're all airtight as can be and play nicely for the time being.
I think once this social distancing situation is over I'll try to find a (somewhat) local accordion workshop to get the work done for me. Although that might end up pretty costly because of the size of my herd... Well, there's still time to make a priority list which of the boxes gets the treatment first. (:)

On an eight-bass box, the two buttons nearest to your face on the inside (bellows side) give you your minor chord when pulling. If you have a tune that starts and ends with these pulled buttons, you have a minor tune. Hope that helps. :)
-
Thanks to both Tirpous and David for their guidance, we'll see what happens.

What shall we do with a drunken sailor should do for starters, played on the outside row of a 2 row box to match with the available minor chord (chinmost inside pair of buttons on the bass end)

Here's a pair of E minor tunes, learned from Boldwood's Feet, Don't Fail Me Now album.
Tunbridge Beauties and Galloway Girth (https://youtu.be/eS9x3eOCfZA)
Galloway Girth is obviously a version of All the Way to Galway.

Oh thanks Pikey, will dig out my copy.
I thought that was a nice twist on a well - used - for - Morris tune.
Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Spotted your youtube channel avatar, are you (or someone you know) a fan of of Order of the Stick?
Lovely bounce, in any case. A nice example of why I should keep trying because that f c _ c is worthwhile, and go back to this tune.

I'm fascinated by your ability to recognise it. Yes, indeed, that's a fictional character I've created lots of years ago in the style of OotS. You seem to be a lady with a refined taste in webcomics. Chapeau! :D
And thanks for the nice words on the recording as well.

Anahata played Galloway Girth -
Galloway Girth is obviously a version of All the Way to Galway.
We play this is Tumbling Tom with The Sloe, but I’ve always thought it a major tune with A’s and B’s that both finish on the minor. Isn’t it great how different sets of chords all fit.

I love minor tunes, they're great exercise in using more buttons and just opening up your playing options!
Here's an original one, Samhain Jig :)

Sure, minor tunes are great ... emotional and deeply moving.I love them: playing and listening.
Here are two Mazurkas which I recorded recently: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i_u733Of89o & https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOnQ0Ui8VSE
-
Here's a centre france mazurka I've always loved, Mazurka Rigal, here played on a Hohner Club in C/F. It fits on any 2 row 8 bass box (with thirds taped off, of course) beautifully. It plays on the inside row in Gm

Le Chale Bleu (The Blue Scarf) A Polish or Russian Waltz composed by Jerzy Petersburski, a Jewish pianist from Warsaw.

Hope this counts - the first half is minor but then it goes into the major. Soling Anders' Boda Waltz, played on a Verde Cork.

Hi. I assume if it a tune publicly available on YouTube we can link to it. If this is not protocol please moderate it.

This is Bouree de Montfort in E minor played by Paul Young. It is the latest tune on my learning curve. I really love the bounce of this.

….and another from me!
On the rules of diminishing losses, I thought I'd cut my losses here so there's a few fluffs I'm afraid, but..... you know how it can be when each take seems to get worse!
A particularly odd tune that I find appealing, sort of 'gothic' maybe?
Certainly the title is full of doom and gloom!
Downfall of the Gin here.....
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CaAGZ47DnNg
A 3/2 hornpipe from John Walshe's collection from around 1731.
Written by 'Ravenscroft' a tunesmith of the moment.

Well done! This is a difficult tune on melodeon and I don't think I could do it on a two row; such a stretch to the accidentals.
-
Thanks!
Yep it's an odd one, but I do like it when I feel in the mood.

Here's a quick blast through "T'Owd Wife O'Coverdale". Our band Tumbling Tom were pointed to this by Bob Ellis when we played for a modern interpretation of a traditional Dales evening of dancing. Thanks Bob. I subsequently learnt it from our box player Hugh Taylor who'll probably give me a cuddy lug for transposing it from Am to Em to make it playable on my 2 row Hohner.

Sooner or later somebody had to do it.
"Micare Micare Beta (Ursae) Minoris"
I finally attempt a minor tune, find a use for the F#/B bass pair on my A&D 2R6B and learn the meaning of Aeolian (Thanks Greg).

Thank you for the playing and thank you for the thanks, Peader. That AD sounds rather nice. I look forward to hearing more of it.
Modes and diatonic instruments are made for each other. It's just a case of where to start...and what to do about that missing note.
-
Well done Peadar and I agree with Greg, your AD sounds good!

Yes it's a Loffet Pro in C/F. Picked it up from Bernard himself at Les Panards a few years ago; such a shame he's no longer with us.
Thanks for your kind comment

I am posting this mostly to find out what the tune is called. I heard it on the first(?) Blackbeard's Teaparty CD and they called it "The Belgian Tune". But what is it really called? And who wrote it?
The Belgian Tune (https://soundcloud.com/user-318525393/the-belgian-tune)
Played (not very well) in Em on a D/G Tommy.

This may not help much, but there's a similar tune here: http://www.folktunefinder.com/tunes/144200

10/10 for finding this. Why didn't I think to look for it on The Session. Belgian, Bulgarian, Irish ?

Thanks Greg and Q.
Twinkle twinkle little star must be the first melodeon tune a lot of us learn - credit to Lady Handcart for teaching it to me in Absolute Beginners Playgroup 2019. Going up a tone to get it into a minor key was revelatory. The tune seemed to demand a slower tempo in the minor key- then came the realisation that the third set of bass buttons gives pull/push first and fifth (i.e F#/B basses actually deliver B/F# , for playing in the key of B) and I discovered new and interesting ways of running out of air.
If there is anyone reading who hasn't yet tackled a minor tune and isn't above nursery rhymes you could do worse than try Twinkle twinkle little star.

Tune in Action (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-s2sD1UNklA)
Listen to the sound of a penny dropping! That would be the Paul Young who played on the first two BTP CDs. I just assumed that they called it The Belgian Tune because they had forgotten the real name. What do they say about assumption...?

“Johnny, We Hardly Knew Ye”
Well, it was bound to happen...Here’s my very first real submission of a tune to this site (and I think, any site) and it’s a simple aging rookie’s attempt to break out of the “only the key stamped on the box” routine. So, my two boxes are played in their relative minors, which I think I now understand are Bmin on the beautiful 1954 Baldoni-Bartoli D/C# and Amin on the also beautiful (in its own way) 1930s Beaver Brand (Hohner-made Pokerwork precursor B/C converted (with help of a melnet transoceanic friend) from its B/H (B/E) original.
So many firsts...first tune, first minor key work, first real use of my new video editor (which works great without video...way faster rendering and smaller files. Plus, as they say, I have the “face for radio” so it’s a win/win.)
I hope the sound of these nice old boxes comes through a bit, and you all will certainly excuse my beginner’s rough and simple musicianship.

Thanks, and regards,

Thank you, Peadar. I appreciate the feedback. I feel like one of those 8 year-olds who come to the session and play their whistles for the appreciative circle...except, they are most always better than I am! But never too late to learn, eh?

We used to play it a bit faster but I've got used to slower mazurkas these days.

Here's another minor tune from me 'The Mumping Maid' which I found on Folktunefinder. The info there says it's from a book of dance tunes from 1932 called Maggot Pie, about which I know very little. It doesn't seem to attribute the tune to any particular composer, but I get the impression that they were all modern tunes (at least they were in 1932!)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7l5eJTEmlcU
As far as I can ascertain 'mumping' means deceitful.

Also thanks for the nice comments about my Chale Bleu.

Thanks for that. Nice to hear minor tunes that aren't slow airs or slow dance tunes (though I do like them). This bounced along nicely. Trouble is, I've got an earworm now. (:)

Here is our version of the tune Theme Vannetais based on our playing for Sheffield women's dance team Lizzie Dripping for their dance 'Twiglet'.
The tune was originally composed by Jean Choucun of the band Tri Yann and used for the theme music for Picou Fils de son Père, a Breton television serial from the 1970s. It has since been adopted by many English Morris and Border dance teams for their own versions of 'Twiglet'.
Jan plays a Castagnari 'Laura' melodeon in D/G; Steve plays a Castagnari '1914' melodeon in D/G

Not usually too keen on that tune because so over-played, but I really like what you two did with it, both the driving rhythm and the build-up of variations.
[makes mental note to look out for Lizzie Dripping when we're all allowed out to play again!]

Yep, very enjoyable Steve and Jan, thank you for that.
Lovely to hear such tight playing, and variations too.
Well played both!

Great lot of stuff this month chaps; thanks, and keep it going! Here's a couple of sets I intended to post last week on our local facebook music session lockdown group; circumstances meant I never got round to it. So here, for your sole delectation is a couple of videos, which serendipitously happen to be in a minor key.
https://youtu.be/fXCS4lF9eKU - 2 waltzes from the playing of Mr Cutting, the first being Jon Swayne's rather gorgeous waltz Molinara, as heard on Blowzabella's really rather good CD "Dance". The second is of course the ever-present classic Flatworld.
https://youtu.be/SdCNq4wiv_E - Also learned from the playing of Mr Cutting now I think about it, La Boite a Frissons, a really beautiful fast waltz from Jean Blanchard. I've known this tune years; don't know why it hasn't made it onto my youtube channel by now, because goodness knows, just about everything else has.
All played on the Castagnari Mory in E minor. Please enjoy the company of Mr Tickle and Little Miss Naughty in the background; I've been taking inspiration in set design from Dougie Maclean and his wonderful Mr Tattieface concerts that have he's been posting on facebook during the lockdown (side comment, if you haven't followed those, you really should. 30+ concerts, 30 mins each, and they're fantastic).
-
Thanks again everyone; moving on to the new theme now. As ever, please put late contributions on the end of this thread.
