You know what, last month was so close, let's just run the poll again with one new tune to replace the last months winner:

Spotify users can find an amazing version of Duchess/Dark Girl (labelled 'The Duchess Dressed in Blue') on Tiger Moth's album 'Mothballs Plus'; Courtesy of our own Anahata, we have a splendid version by Ethel's Cats (second tune) (http://www.ethelscats.co.uk/mp3/04LNB.mp3). We're talking about the english tune by the way, not the irish tune with the same name which is *completely* different.

Three Sea Captains:

Here's a nice slow version, played on guitar (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LFCI_kxOJ5E). It's been embellished with a few extra accidentals in this video, but you get the idea. An infeasibly catchy tune which sticks in the brain.

La Marianne:

A beautifully simple waltz written by Frederic Paris of La Chavanee, the chap who wrote Canal in October.

Here's a version of it played on a Castagnari Giordy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JEuQ81GV8wU)! All you need is half a melodeon to play this apparently!  ;D

Well done, Chas. I've only heard a scary tin whistle version by the Dubliners. Cool tune though.

I have encountered DGDIB as 'Over the Waterfall' wearing my 'transatlantic hat' and wonder how many times it crossed the water,from which direction initially, and became inverted and reinvented.

No doctoral thesis responses please, I just met both tunes and recognised a similarity beyond coincidence which may be worth sharing. Even the OSB version was barely English.

Whatever the tune is (not voting) I'm contributing this month. Sort of like telling everybody I've quit smoking, a bit of pressure on myself. (:)

Just wait till Jan 1 and then you can follow the mob and break your resolution.
Of if you are really feeling any crowd pressure angst you just ignore it because, as Kierkegaard  told the world melodeon totm conference in 1850  : "In a world of cowards, the man who runs in the opposite direction is not necessarily afraid...." :P

The trouble with the international ban on smoking in pubs is that when I screw up in a session, I can no longer casually light a cigarette, hoping no-one noticed.

Maybe I should give up smoking and start doing some contributions - but then, if my resolution is to do something to improve the world, maybe I shouldn't contribute...  Resolve to play quieter?

The second or so of these comes with Italian reeds da Milano;  and if Ms  la Dolce Vita at the top right is prepared to take you along to the pub as her accessory then the punters will be distracted enough not to hear anyway.

OSB = Old Swan Band.
Over The Waterfall was introduced to me recently as "an American version of Dark Girl Dressed in Blue"
- there was no pretence that they were anything other than two versions of the same tune, after you've swapped the A and B in one of them.

According to the Fiddler's Companion, "Dark Girl" was first published as a song around 1855.  The first noted appearance of "Over the Waterfall" in America seems to be early 20th Century  - but all this tells us is that no one had got around to publishing it or recording it sooner.  There is also an Irish version of "Dark Girl" which is even closer to OTW than the usual English version.

Of course, since "Dark Girl" was originally a song it is entirely possible that it was put to an existing tune.

Which leaves us none the wiser, really  (:)

I have to confess to having not voted for our eventual winner - but now I've researched her I think I can perhaps live with ...      the dark girl ..     (undressed) ..       in blouse  :o
