Post by: Tyker on January 07, 2011, 11:09:59 AM
On a recent thread , it was mentioned that to dance French dances , musicians should know the dance first .

BTW , I'd love to go to Gennetines as the dancing goes on until 03H30 !

If you want to learn French dances in England a good place for information is to join Kerry Fletcher's mailing list (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/kerryfletcher/).  It is run via a Yahoo group where you can read all the posts without joining if that suits you.

I've done this sort of thing, been taken through the dances by the event organizer, and it does help, I have to say.  But I've never been able to shed my discomfort while dancing, and it gets worse as I get older and the arthritis creeps up.

It's often said that musicians should be able to do the dances they play for, whether it's French, Morris or whatever, but I don't think it's necessarily true. It's important to know how the dance goes, and to be able to feel the rhythm of it, but not necessarily to actually dance it.
There are quite a few excellent musicians around who are great at playing for dancing, but whose sense of rhythm and coordination doesn't extend as far as their feet!

.. not in my experience   (I recall you can dance 'til dawn). Then up early for lessons through the day.

Nearer to home - try http://www.emade.org.uk/events.php

eMade run mainly out of the 'domestic' Kinnersley Castle in the Welsh borders and serve all Eurodance addicts but with a tendency to Swedish and French.  Accom is in dorms - or B&B nearby.  Some do camp in the grounds - even dunnit m'self  :Ph

Click on to programme - looks that the February meet will be Swedish 1st half, French latter half with some overlap. You can book parts of the week. Cooking is very veggie (I take pork pies).
