Just wanted to say thank you to this forum for the knowledge I've gained during the last month or so. I've posted a simple version of Princess Royal which I'm quite pleased with, mainly because I find it so hard to perform in front of the camera!

Perhaps you will allow me just one constructive piece of criticism about your playing: It's all a little on the smooth side - all the notes run into each other with no daylight between them. On some of the phrases, try releasing the buttons a fraction before starting the next note, so that there is a tiny silence which separates the notes.
For example, if you think in terms of 'diddle dahs', the start of the A-muisc (as you play it) is a bit like this:
diddle | dah dah dah, diddle | dah dah dah, dah | etc.....
Try playing it like this:
diddle | yup dah dah, diddle | yup dah dah, etc....
The slight gaps make it instantly more danceable.

Obviously this is just my way and others will have different ideas about how to play tunes, and you can take your pick and choose your own style! It'd be a boring old world if we all did everything the same. (:)

Neil - you're doing amazing to say you have only been playing around a month.
As you get more into tunes and pick up things from listening, you'll find your own style as Steve says.
There are always 'different' ways of playing a tune - Steve's excellent version is great for dancing the morris - steady pace, nice gaps, and played with lift and drive.
On the otherhand, I usually go into 'freefall' and wander around a tune and not usually play it in the same way twice. ::) Not good for dancing to....

Listen to loads of players, practice and shave ya head are the most important things to remember.... ;D

Really competent and amazing at a month! The bass is particularly nice. Next steps?
o As Steve says - separate your notes with 'white space'. His version is
particularly 'for morris' but the technique has application in all music
o Try runs of 'cross fingering' - bars 9-12 work well on this tune
Just pull a D or D chord and let your fingers do the work
zig zag the falling cadence using both rows VVVVV
o Get those pinkies going (33% more button power)!
An exercise is to play a tune you know with fingers 3/4/5 only
Then try same on left end chording (useful but less important)

Thanks for the continuing advice, nicely explained too. Now that I know where the notes are it's time to learn to how to 'play'.
Almo - my clippers are always set to 'stun' ;)
